Can anyone recommend a good app to find walking and cycling paths? Thank in anticipation.

OS maps have ALL bridlepaths shown so in England you can cycle on any of them.

Viewranger defo.
You can get routes whatever country your in, paid and free.
It will allow you to download map tiles for lots of different map styles so you don’t need s data connection.
You can record and save your routes or create routes and tracks to follow before you leave home.
It also has an automated route planner function.
Open cycle and open street map are free.
I use them all over Europe.

Komoot is great for cycling , you can get one free map area for free, so free to try.

OS maps app is also good but personally don’t feel it as good.

Having tried a few I’m a massive fan of Komoot and even paid the one off fee for the world maps as I was so impressed :cycle:
Just started your blog, we also had the van in the avatar off Lee. Looking forward to a good read. 👍

Excellent hope you enjoy it. I love reading my old posts and seeing how many amazing places we’ve visited, it’s like a diary. We’ve had 2 motorhomes off Lee now and both have been brilliant (y)

A great feature of Komoot is that you can plan a route on a larger screen, laptop or ipad and then ‘send’ the route to the phone for the navigation. It will tell you the rise and fall in altitude along your route, the road/path surfaces, you can see comments and suggestions about routes from other users. Near us in the New Forest , the trailways are clearly shown, its great.

An unexpected bonus with our Bosch powered e bikes with a Kiox controller/display is that it automatically tracks your rides and you can see where you went, how fast you were going, the pedalling rate, how much power you were putting in, altitude etc at any point, all this with no effort on your part, pretty impressive stuff !

Another vote for komoot. It does have its drawbacks, not so good for MTB. If you do plan a road ride interrogate the route as will send you down a rough track instead of a tarmac surface as I have found out, this also maynot be a right of way either.
Best plan a ride or walk on a large screen.
I have found routes when in France posted up from other users and ridden them.
Pretty good at integrating with Garmin (when it's not held to ransome)

If you are confident with map reading and devising routes it's hard to beat the OS Maps app. If you prefer to follow other people's routes then the other apps are the way to go. It's fair to say that while the OS maps show rights of way etc, they may not be obvious or even passable on the ground.

Totally agree you can’t beat an OS map (waterproof explorer 1:25) and they come with digital downloads if you need it https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/gps/walking-gps.html

go on a navigation course your walks will be markedly improved and give you confidence to walk places you may never dream of.

get yourself a copy of this book (y) ( you may have all this stuff I should have linked to the OP apologies)

just add get yourself a good compass Silva are ok I prefer Suunto compasses they do a range but I use the M3 it’s a Brilliant instrument, just don’t leave it by your phone all compass’s will then point in the wrong direction after your phone revives a inbound call !

loads of trails for you to download/save on these apps, we’ve used them both extensively when touring.

Agree, although it was some time ago for me. Walkingworld and GoForAwalk provided routes that others have walked and recommend. OS maps do show some CountryWalking and Trail routes. Also some bike routes. Watch out for routes "that I've just done" (ie. private ones) as they're not usually to the same standard. I think Komoot will tend to be full of that type - good for inspiration, perhaps, but they may not be as enjoyable. Trailzilla is/was another source like OSmaps. Some SusTrans routes are difficult to follow (poorly signed) and not traffic free. It all depends on what you're looking for...

OS maps are the definitive guide for walking and cycling it does not have someone else’s opinion on Top 10 best walks it’s a voyage of discovery.

some of our favourite walks would never be included in a Top 10 or 20 walk guides are fine but really are limited an OS map opens up the country you may even find Local area’s of open Navigation You would not know about unless you had an OS map.
