I have watched with a certain detached interest the loss of municipal camp sites in France and the rise of the Camping Car Park. However I must now declare that I am now a firm believer in the French Municipal. We always mix our stopping places, but it’s hot at the moment, so as well as free spots we’ve needed places where we can just get our stuff out and relax a bit. Cue the municipal. We stayed at a nice one near Clamecy and now we’re at Camping de La Trezee just outside Briare. What a gem. Right next to the canal, clean facilities, brilliant cycling and a magnificent Gustave Eiffel canal bridge over La Loire. And all for less than a fiver a day or £7.50 with electric. Today, which is Friday, there’s 1 motorhome (us) 4 campervans and 1 tent on a 90+ pitch site. Support the municipal, vive la municipal.

I love municipal campsites and always use them if I can. I'm not sure why others don't especially as they are sometimes cheaper than Aires.

We use them too. Generally when we want a few nights before moving on again and feel the need to spread out a bit outside when it's hot. They are cheap and sometimes that does mean you get what you pay for (or maybe you don't get what you don't pay for would be more accurate) but they are often less busy and often very French (which I quite like).

We are just down the road from you on a nice little municipal campsite in Rogny les Sept Ecluses, Le Lancieres €12 including EHU right next to the Loing river. There is another similar municipal, same name, only 10km away on the Briare canal at Chatillon-Coligny which we looked at on a bike ride.

Do you use any particular app to find the specifically municipal sites?

Cheers

Back in our caravanning days, we used to make the journeys down and back through France part of the holiday. We used to use the yellow large scale Michaline map book and look for lakes near villages. Approx 7 times out of 10 there would be a municipal site there.

You can pick up some municipals on Camper Contact but actually we find more of them listed on Google maps and more often than not with space available (slightly less so in some big tourist areas such as Annecy). Like emjaiuk says, you can find them in small villages near lakes etc, but also in larger towns and often with good links into town centres.
