My 2019 swift c205 came with a vin chip, either fitted at the factory or by the previous owner, that is unknown. I contacted CRIS to see if I could get the ownership details transferred to me, but the guy on the phone said that can't be done and I need to buy a new chip. This seems pointless to me as I already have it all fitted, they just need to update their database. Has anybody successfully done this?

Cheers

I’ve not heard of these before, is this the correct website for your vin chip vendor?

If so, on their FAQ:

How do I CRiS register that I am the new owner of a caravan?

If your caravan is brand new the dealer will register you for free automatically, there is no need to do anything

Call our contact centre on 0203 282 1000 to speak to an advisor, we are open Monday-Friday 9.00am – 5.30pm. Please ensure that you have your 17-digit VIN and a payment method of debit or credit card for the re-registration fee to hand

If you have the CRiS Registration Document from the previous keeper, you can fill out the CVR8 section and send it to our address:

CRiS Ltd, Unit 1, First Floor Greenways Business Park, Bellinger Close, Chippenham, SN15 1BN, along with a cheque for £19.95 made Payable to CRiS Ltd

I've sold my caravan, what do I need to do?

On selling your CRiS Registered caravan please ensure that you fill out the CVR7 (Notification of Sale or Transfer) section of your Registration Document with the new keeper's details and post to CRiS.
Please ensure that the named current keeper signs and dates the form as confirmation of the sale.

On selling your CRiS Registered caravan you can also advise CRiS of the sale by clicking here, you will then be able to complete the online form to advise us of the sale of your caravan.

Or you can call the contact centre on: 0203 282 1000, our opening hours are Monday-Friday 9.00am – 5.30pm

I'm guessing it's no different from the ID chips they put in pets. The RFID chip is hidden somewhere inaccessible. If the police find the vehicle, they wave the wand reader around and it returns a unique ID. The police then look it up on a database to find the owner.

That's the number I phoned earlier, the guy did admit he didn't know about motorhomes and said he'd email me details, which he hasn't yet. I'll try again and see if I can talk to somebody that knows what they're talking about. 😡

Not a lot of good if the owner has changed and not provided the details of the new owner, as happened with the OP.

And do caravans have VIN numbers? I thought the CRiS scheme was invented many years ago because they did not have a VIN number?

The motorhome version was overseen by just one guy back in 2022 & no-one else seemed to know about it then either as CRIS very caravan focused.

We have it. You also get the transparent I.D. logos to stick on various windows indicating the "chips" are located on the van somewhere. Is it any good, 🤷‍♂️ luckily not had to test it yet so but probably the 100kgs of assorted wheels and pedal locking security deters most casual scroates.
Mike.

It's not really got anything to do with the VIN. It's the company's own numbering. They issue you with a pack and tie those numbers to your details.

If the owner has changed, you pay them to update the database.
