Planning our trip to lake Garda in May. I understand my, less than 3.5t van, is the car category and can purchase online e Vignettes at their petrol stations but can’t find a conclusive answer as to whether I will also be clobbered with toll charges on their m ways or main roads (s roads)?
Anyone out there got the t shirt on this subject?

This covers you for all motorways, i have used them for my under 3.5tonne Adria

Last time I went to Austria, I bought a 10 day vignette for about €8.50. It is currently € 9.90 for under 3.5 ton.

We bought ours at the border in a patrol station. We didn't pay any other road taxes or tolls, although the following tunnels and motorway attract extra tolls, or Streckenmaut.

A 9 Bosruck Tunnel
A 10 Tauern Tunnel
A 10 Katschberg Tunnel
A 11 Karawanken motorway
A 13 Brenner motorway
S 16 Arlberg expressway

Bigger vehicles over 3.5 tons become more expensive and depending on Euro emissions rating & axles, cost at least 22 cents a kilometre, plus the cost of a 'GoBox' - a cab recording box. You can pre-pay the GoBox. Broadly for heavier mohos, a GoBox costs more than a 10 day vignette once you go over 39km, so the better option is to take smaller roads.

Or, those of us with heavier MHs can miss Austria's unfair charges for non commercial vehicles altogether, and go via Switzerland at a cost of CH32.00 Francs, for a 10 x day pass, valid for 12 x months. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We are 3,5T converted van. Always buy the vignette as we enter Austria at first garage., and display it in the windscreen. Did this for over 20 years now, with various vans up to 3.5T no issues.

I camped with a German once who bought his vignette at tge first service station he came to in Austria on the motorway he entered on. He got a ticket through the post Toni’s home address, I think 150€, for being on the fist part of their motorway without the vignette! His family told him over the phone. So lesson to learn buy before you go on any part of their motorway.

I don’t think he told you the full picture. Something he missed. I’m telling you since the year vignette was introduced, I travel from London to Romania 2-4 times a year. When you enter Austria via motorway, you have a petrol station immediately after the toll boots, 50-100meters, you can also buy at last petrol station before you cross the border. I never bought on line. Same goes for Slovakia, Check Republic, Hungary and Romania.

If you enter via A, B roads and then you hop on the motorway without vignette, you will be clocked and fined. You have a chance to buy before hoping on. If you enter Austria via motorway, you can get it right at the border, whether is a garage or vignette boot.

Came through Slovenia and Austria on the toll roads in May without any passes and have not had anything through the post.
I don’t think they have our details now we have left the EU👍

And no need for separate per mile toll fees either?

All these rules for different countries seems to be a bloody minefield .
