Sorry for being daft but first time … ;-)

Anyway with Swiss and Austrian vignettes if I buy digital what are the rules at the toll gates - do you just go straight through (other than some of the identified pie sections ) , or is there certain gates to look out for ( 3.5 tonne btw ) . It seems to me that buying in line , if and when I need it saves hassle - is that correct ?

Cheers

For the Austrian Vignette (Pickl), have a look at https://shop.asfinag.at/en/, this is the company that runs the service, if you do the online purchase then you have to wait 16 days I believe (need to check) before you can use it, if you are 3.5 or under then it´s a few minutes stop to pick one up before or at the border, the same with the Swiss one.

Any ADAC shop (Certainly in the South of Germany) will also sell the sticker.

The sticker is checked via the overhead gantry cameras, the only toll gates are on the extra pay for sections, tunnels, Brenner etc, I am not sure you can get digi access to all of them...

The website will explain it and other funsters will have an opinion.

I run under 3.5 and buy a 1 year sticker and pay cash for the extra tolls, but then I live next to Austria and that´s what works for me.

Swiss - if it’s like the over 3.5t they didn’t seem interested at the border for us.
I bought it on their VIA app which sends you a QR code as well for them to scan if interested. However the VIA app (maybe for over 3.5t) also shows the vignette and can be viewed if they want to.
I had App open and passports and vehicle paperwork to hand at border and they just waved us through.
They seemed more interested in pulling vans to weigh them when we went.
Best tip I can give for Switzerland is stick rigidly to the speed limit and be mindful that in villages, the speed limit can fluctuate many times between approach and exiting a village so go by the road signs and not your satnav speed limit, otherwise it’s a big fine if stopped.
Austria - we had a Go Box as over 3.5t so cant advise you but never saw anyone of authority whilst there.

The Swiss paint their speed cameras grey and don't put up warning signs, the police also like to hide behind hedges etc when using hand held speed guns.

Here too in Germany, they put the van 100m away from the actual radar, you don´t see them until it´s almost too late

And they paint the cameras green to blend in with the trees!!

Bought our Austrian vignette yesterday. 10€ for 10 days (3500kg PVC). Stopped at the first petrol station in Austria that we came across. Took all of 30 seconds. No check of V5 or ID. Literally hand over 10€ and get given the sticker in return. Simples! 😀

Similar in Slovakia - euro 12 for v10 days, but difference from Austria is that even over 3.5t all Motor Caravans being M1, albeit Special Purpose, only have to buy vignette.

Whereas in Austria even our MH 350 kg over 3.5t requires a GO Box and estimate toll charges from Slovak border to Italy border and back are euro 250.

What a ridiculous discrepancy between two neibouring EU countries!!!

My German neighbour at the site I am on told be he uses an app when going through Switzerland instead of by a vignette at the border. Like him we are just under 7.5 tonnes.
Has anyone else used this app?

Yes, it’s the VIA app in the App Store, really easy to use, hopefully Austria will follow suit.

I fully agree that the Austrians are making a lot of money at our expense. Our MH is 3.8 tonnes and if we used the Go Box to go across Austria to Hungary it would cost us about 150 Euros. So we forget about motorways and drive all the way through Austria and camp for the night in Hungary. Very pleasant as well.

Loaded the app, entered details +3.5tonnes and minum ticket is for 10 days costing between 25 and 35 swiss frank's for most EU country's including the likes Netherlands, Belgium which as far as I know don't require payments.

No it’s just for Switzerland, the country list is where you tell them where your vehicle is registered (other countries>UK) if you are sure you will only be in Switzerland one day this year pick single day CHF25 or if likely more than one day it’s CHF32.5, they don’t have to be consecutive days.

Thank you, my mistake.
No probs, I had my son in the navigators seat trying to figure it out as we were heading towards the German/Swiss border…it was a nightmare 😂 but we made it…the scenery was worth the price on its own.

A couple of years ago, when I did some research because I was appalled at the price of the Go Box, if you did not use motorways you did not need vignette or Go Box. Since then I have travelled through Austria eight times. We have never had a problem. From Germany we stop at one of the Stellplatz in Passau and once we are in Hungary we stop near Sopron at a campsite on a thermal baths site for one night (Hegykö). Once or twice we have stopped in Austria for an overnighter. One place was Liezen behind a sports centre (Free). The other site was a lovely little village just a few kilometre from the Danube called Ardagger (also free but with Honesty Box).
Enjoy.
