Video Editing

I looking to do some simple video editing and adding a sound track.
After a search on here I downloaded Virtual Dub a free download.
I tried to open an MP4 file and got "unknown or unsupported file type "
So tried a video from another source, .Mov and got "unknown or unsupported file type "
Anyone have a clue where I`m going wrong or how I can do this editing in a simple way ?

In order to open MP4 (and other video files) in VirtualDub you need a plugin called 'Virtualdub FFMpeg Input Plugin'

I think @barsteward is probably right, and I also suspect Codecs may be the problem. Little bits of software that help the vast range of different video file formats to work on players and editors. it was an endless problem for me when I was trying to teach video editing in school. Even within a given format (eg .avi) there are variations.

I rarely have problems with video file compatibility since downloading the K-Lite free codec pack, which I've been using for a good few years.
