Tax expires on 31st August, only journey following that is 100 mile trip to the dealer to exchange the van for a new one on the 5th September.
Renew or not, wise or unwise?
Yes, I know the DVLA refund complete months unused, so would loose about £15, so maybe renewing is wise.

You could do what I did and forget to tax it, two final reminders dropped through the letterbox yesterday August 23 for both car and van, have been driving around in both untaxed since August 1. I always do it when I get the reminders through the post which are well in advance but I don’t believe that I received them this year hence the untaxed situation.

Exactly the same happened to my son earlier this week. No reminder from DVLA, he's now set a reminder on his phone for next year v

Your call, when they seize it and you have to pay the VED and the fine plus storage costs and taxi home, the £15 will seem like a bargain.

:)
Never going to happen in that short space of time.

I bought my motorhome the end of June and its only just being taxed today. Not heard anything from dvla

If the postal reminders are unreliable, a shout out for DVLA's driver and vehicle account service, which when populated with your information, can send out emails/SMS as reminders:

If you are not using it till the 5th then put it on SORN and then tax it online on the morning you set off and then cancel it when you arrive. The money should never end up leaving your bank as the payment date is usually about 3 weeks after taxing it so 100% legal and hopefully FOC as you will have the email trail to prove

The ANPR systems will pick it up instantly. You will probably get lucky, you might not.

For £15, I wouldn’t take the chance.

Just set up a DD and travel with one less thing to worry about. You'll probably pay for a month but c'mon

I work in Birmingham and a lambourghini was belting around causing a nuisance, turned out he didn't have any road tax and they seized the vehicle. Just saying

Same experience, bought a car last August, paid the VED for 12 months as part of the transaction and didn’t give it a further thought. Monday morning this week and a ‘final notice’ arrives from DVLA ‘tax it or lose it’. No previous reminders received - letter or email.
I taxed it online the same day backdated to 1 August. Next day I’m driving along the A30 in Cornwall and there’s a VED check vehicle on the side of the road. Lucky escape!
