Hi all,

So I know this might be a really daft question but I have never done anything like this before...

I have a Vauxhall vivaro van but the engine has blown however the bodywork is perfect, is there any way I could chop the cab out and convert the back into a trailer home (like a caravan)????

Thanks

If you have the skills and workshop why not
Usually the rear bulkhead just unbolts

For what it's going to cost you and the likely refusal to let you on campsites I would buy a cheap caravan and get on with life. Trying to chop a van in half and make it into something it was not designed for is a bit like trying to redesign the wheel.

Yeah agree, not the best van to convert in the first place, not big enough in the right places, you need a caravan to get stuff out of so might as well stick with the caravan.

Ok thanks

It’s just that it seems a waste to scrap it and I like the idea of having a project

Nose weight.... A major issue.

With the wheels being very near the back the weight on the drawbar and towball will far exceed anything you may use to tow it with.
Usual maximum towball download is 75kg to 100kg.... That's why trailer and caravan wheels are central.

Ok yes I understand, this was more where I was heading with the question as to whether it is possible or not more than cost.

So you believe it’s a non starter?

Thanks

More of an incomplete question: how old is the van? A replacement engine is not so difficult, have you spoken to a mechanic about the van?

Lots of Vivaros has been converted into campers, but no one chops them up LOL.

The van is 08 plate and has 180,000 on the clock and has already had a reconditioned engine once that cost £1500, I am reluctant to spend more money to get it running and was wondering if there was chance to do something cool, maybe she’s had her day then lol

Thanks

I don’t need it for work anymore as I’ve replaced the van but I have this on my hands and wondered if there was a project there or not that’s all.

Thanks

Vauxhall vivaro and Renault traffic are the same van so getting an engine should be easy enough.
Nissan and Fiat also make an identical van but not for our market (that I know of)
