In the dim and distant past, in a bout of over-zealous hoovering, I managed to break the little plastic clip that ‘locked’ the aluminium extension pole on our vacuum cleaner (it isn’t a Hoover). I stopped it moving with a bit of duck tape but, apart from being unsightly, it prevented changing the length of the pole when in use.

Today, the old tape was peeling off and I removed it and used the cleaner, managing to badly pinch my finger when the extension pole shot back in when pushing forward. Although I’d like to smash the whole thing into atoms with a 7lb lump hammer, I’d like to give it one more chance and was hoping some of you creative DIYers could come up with ideas of how to effect a stop device.
I’ve attached a photo of the basta*d extension hose. The arrowed bit depresses into the chosen dimple on the pole and the now-missing plastic clip used to slide over the top keeping the catch depressed.
Now the only thing depressed is me with a glowing, bruised, ring finger.
So help gratefully requested.🙂

Would a jubilee clip work?
That sounds like a plan. Good idea. I’ll look for a bigger jubilee clip than I have in my tool box.

Have you thought about approaching the manufacturer for spares? It looks like that whole grey plastic part is just held in place by the two clips below it.

Simples... put a self taper through the plastic bit :-)

Trouble is it won't allow easy changing of the tube length - best bet is a clamping screw knob, something like the below, so it can be easily tightened/untightened when wanting to change the tube:

Am looking on fleabay for such a thing. Needs to be quite small and short thread to go through the plastic bit. Would prefer to see and handle the clamps so may delay buying until back in York when a visit to Barnitts is possible.

What vacuum have you got, you may be able to source the bit off Ebay.

Mention has been made of a jubilee clamp however the outer tube isn't likely to be able to be squished sufficiently in order to grip the inner tube, not unless you've got muscles like Thor!

It’s a Philips Cityline Venice. It‘s at least 15 years old, bought in France for our holiday home there. Have searched for spares for this model and have only found replacement bags!

Or maybe something like this would work.

4W4 Stainless Steel Thumb Screw/Wing Hose Pipe Clip Jubilee Clamp 40-60mm (12MM BW) x1 https://amzn.eu/d/9cfSyZK
This might work as it looks like the pressure on the plastic catch doesn’t need to be that great to lock the tube in place.
