Looking for one
Hi all
I am looking at a converted ambo to possibly buy. (Another high miles p boxer van...160k, 2016 euro 6, had new EGF, DPF machine clean and engine remap but that might be for another post!!)

I've asked for V5 (attached) and I'm confused! The revenue weight and max permissible mass are different. I've got C1 grandmother rights and would prefer the revenue weight thanks 😬 The guy hasn't weighed it since converting it. Does this V5 mean it's been downplated? Can it be un-downplated?

I'd have to change it from ambulance tax class and body type anyway, it's meets criteria for motorcaravan, but I'm not bothered if it gets van with windows or whatever, so would i go with the 4005kg and get the VED down to £165?

Thanks 😊

It's quite normal for DVLA to change the revenue weight but not the gross weight ....it's because DVLA is run by idiots.
The tax is already at the PHGV rate (£165) but it's increasing to £175.....first price rise in over 20 years
It's easy enough to get the gross weight corrected by changing the weight on the V5 and sending it in with a covering letter.
The revenue weight is for road tax purposes.
Max gross weight is the all up weight.
It has been UPRATED from 3500kg to 4005kg.
It will not get reclassified as a motorhome after convertion, it will become a 'van with windows' at best.

Ok cool, so my max weight with conversion & payload is the revenue weight at 4005kg, and it's a PHGV. Phew.

It's still registered as an Ambulance, so not yet a PHGV. Ambulances do not pay road tax .
The revenue weight is above 3500kg, so it could be a simple paper exercise to change it to PHGV. Have you see the vehicle plate to check that the max gross and axle weights are ok for the stated revenue uplate to 4005kg?

No I've not. The guy that's converted it is the 2nd owner after the ambulance service, so it must've been them that uprated it, so I would hope they've done it properly at least! I will add it to the list of things to check if I go to see it.

Is it legal for a private owner to keep the ambulance tax class, as that is tax free isn't it? And incorrectly categorised and perhaps making insurance and MOT iffy (e.g. ambulance should be class 5, but if tested as presented (camper) would be class 4. So catch a policeman on a bad day, may well face no MOT and no insurance issues....

Just putting it out there, not saying I'm right or bothered enough to debate, but something for you to research before purchase.

No 100% best check it out a call to the DVLA is your best bet

That's why I've said I'd change it. I've looked into it for sure. You can't tax it as an ambo if it's not being used as such. But you can tax it and send off the V5 with the changes and use the vehicle whilst you're waiting according to DVLA 😊

I'd get it on a weighbridge before parting with any money, youi've no idea how much weight the chap who converted it has added - and you say he's not had it weighed.
There might be less spare than you hope.
