ford cargo 7.5t 1989
I have a ford cargo iveco 1989 horselorry.
I have converted the stables into master bedroom/living room. the front already had sleeping (above cab) and kitchen/toilet/shower as was a horselorry setup for horse show stay overs.
i have grandfather rights to drive 7.5t
I currently have equine motor insurance with breakdown (great value as lorry breakdown is very expensive)
I currently have HGV mot.

i understand what is needed to convert to motorhome v5 (cooking facilities, windows, side door, fixed table etc.) this was mostly already done but i still need repaint outside, add decals and add an awning.

but ive been told i can meanwhile change v5 to private hgv?
is the mot for private hgv the same as normal hgv mot? would it be still as strict?
do private hgv class have 7.5t limit still or is it then done instead by the manufactures axle weight limits?
as its 1989 will it become tax exempt? and would it become mot exempt? if so when?
what are the benefits for changing to private hgv and also the benefits when it becomes a motorhome? ( i know u can with motorhome class u are accepted more at campsites and you can have contents insurance)

please say what vehicle tests i need, how i go about them and any other links or info please

thanks

terry

Adding decals awning in fact everything on DVLA list does not guarantee registration as a motor caravan(ask me how I know). No real difference in MOT test, road tax less (165) for phgv.I think historic vehicle rule is just that any vehicle Google will tell you for certain, altering tax class IE pheg won't on its own change weights it will remain as is to change weights is a separate operation if plated axle weights are greater it will probably be a paper exercise

DVLA website.........

Vehicles that do not need an MOT

You do not need to get an MOT if:

  • the vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago
  • no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works
If you’re not sure if there have been any substantial changes you can:

Vehicles exempt from vehicle tax

If your vehicle was built before 1 January 1984, you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2024.

If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was registered before 8 January 1984, you do not need to pay vehicle tax from 1 April 2024.

This tells you how to apply , even if they wont change body type to motorcaravan you can still use as such if it complies with fittings spec for Mo/cvn .They will likely change to "van with windows" you take for a class 4 test
not at HGV ATF , where you get them to test as presented class 4 Motor caravan .
PHGV does not have 7.5 ton limit, What is current MGW on V5 . For your grand father rights licence needs to be not more than 7.5 ton .

Regardless of what it states on the v5 mot's are carried out as presented , if it is A camper van it's a class 4 mot.( but the station will need to have suitable ramp or pit to inspect it.

Hgv or phgv makes no odds , same cost to tax and still both class 4 mot if fitted out as a camper. Unfortunately many mot stations are not aware of this and you may have to argue the point. I had to spend 3 hours in the mot station while making the guy contact dvsa to tell him what I've just typed above.

If its a camper and clearly visible inside that it's a camper then it's tested as a class 4 . No arguments. But the interior has to be properly fitted , and no space to carry a load
