I have started the process of increasing the GVW of our recent purchase from 3500kg to 3650kg. Yes, I am aware that we will no longer benefit from the reduced road tax, but that doesn't really matter; anyway, depending on our usage, we may change it to disabled class.

My understanding was that it was a simple paper exercise, and Auto-Trail sent me the following documents...

A certificate of conformity...

that now shows the permissible GVW as 3650kg...

a covering letter...

a new weight label...

It was my understanding that the certificate of conformity and the covering letter would be sufficient proof when making the application. However, when I spoke with a call taker at the DVLA yesterday, and confirmed what documents I had, he said I would need the go to a DVSA weighbridge and get a print out.

Now I am confused!

Bear in mind that the call taker at DVLA was the only person I spoke with (I couldn't get through to the DVSA), and he also spoke about a possible reduction in VED, which is, as I understand it, no longer possible. Thus, I thought perhaps he was mistaken.

Can anyone offer accurate information?
Thanks in advance 🙂

You spoke to a plonker, you only need a weighbridge certificate when downplaying.
As for the VED as long as you are registered as an M1 which it is they should change the Revenue weight as well as the MAM so the £165 VED will apply.

With that C of C it should be a paper exercise, worst case you may need report from SV Tech if they get awkward.

Make sure you state in writing exactly what you need.

If you are currently 3500kg you do not benefit from lower road tax..
You only get that when you go above 3500kg..

We uplated... we are registered as N1 and our VED Is £165..👍👍

That all changes from next April, with the loss of the VED being decreased above 3500kg. :(
You will keep the lower VED if you already have it though.

see my posts 85 and 517 in this thread:

Ved reduces to £165. Once you have the revised V5 you will receive a letter explaining how you re-tax the vehicle and claim a refund of any overpaid VED.

What I meant when I wrote, 'Yes, I am aware that we will no longer benefit from the reduced road tax', was in relation to the changes and the VED no longer being reduced to £165 when uprating above 3500kg. I thought that had come in already, I didn't realise it wasn't starting until April. So, that's a relief.

Thanks for that, Lenny.👍🏻 Yes, I didn't think what he said was correct and was contrary to what I had been told by the Auto-Trail guy, and read on here.

I will send all I have recorded delivery on Monday, which includes the V70.

Thanks folks for the replies.👍🏻

I was obviously confused by the information contained within the 18 pages of the thread referred to by KASPAR, which I started reading before I went to sleep last night, with regard to the VED changes. I must have been too tired to not realise it hadn't started yet. So, at least I'll get a few quid back and won't have to think about changing it to disabled class.

Recorded delivery gets signed for by the sack full at their sorting office & if there is a problem they will denie all knowledge of receiving it. Special delivery is slightly better but not much.

I sit worth the bother of a paper up-plate if you don't get the reduced VED?. What are your current axle weights?
As I wrote in my original post, the decreased VED doesn't really matter; it was more so to increase the payload by a wee bit for peace of mind ....and to be able to truthfully say "no, you're not legal to drive", when the kids start asking.😜 The paperwork is done and wasn't a bother at all.
Now that the VED rules haven't yet come into force, the refund will be welcome.

I went to a weighbridge yesterday with just me in it, and half a tank of diesel; that showed a payload potential of 310kg.

The video will start from the point about the VED change for upplating.

That stating point Matt states if the person uplated today they would still pay the higher road fund, so has the legislation now been changed? Or is this another shock tactic presenting?

I didn't realise we had until April either ...

In my case I have two different tags in my engine bay, one showing 3500kg, the other showing 3850kg. Is that usual?
The V5 shows as 3500kg ... any advice as to how to quickly get it up plated please?

I wasn't aware of that, so thanks.👍🏻

I can’t find any official reference to the VED for PHGV >3500kg increasing in a major amount above £165 in April either - an increase in line with RPI will occur, but not a change to bring it to the same rate as PLG.

The guy in the video obviously had it wrong regarding DVLA not altering revenue weight and VED on some (M1) vehicles at the time of filming, as some owners had and have completed the process satisfactorily as reported on the forum.

It appears he was reporting on the failure of some N1 vehicles to have the VED reduced when up plating as detailed in the other thread on the subject. DVLA now appear to have modified their stance on that issue as it no longer appears on the SV Tech website.

I believe your road tax may go down but so do some of your speed limits.

Would up plating have any effect on the original ULW of the vehicle? Didn’t alter the manufacturer’s CoC for mine when going to 4250kg, so the higher national speed limits still apply.

further comments make me think that the 3850 is the original fiat plate at manufacture and the 3500 plate was added by Adria when they converted the chassis from a van to a motorhome.

not sure what that would then mean in terms of up plating .......

Same on my Adria, although 3650kg from Fiat. So you may strike lucky - depending on which side of the bed the DVLA drone got out of that day - and be able to get back to the 3850kg without having to obtain an engineer’s report.

i will be sending off the enquiry form to SV Tech asap !!!

at some stage i will be upgrading the suspension to rear air, but i am hoping i dont actually need to do that for the 3850 upgrade ... although the sensible thing to do will be to get to a weighbridge just to check i dont need more than 3850 ..
