Had new alternator fitted.
The garage they took us to were really good.
I didn’t realise what a huge undertaking it would be to get to the alternator on a Fiat based A class.
Took the mechanic over 3.5 hours to get the alternator out. I think he stripped out half the steering and the drive shafts.
Similar time to put it all back together.
They were happy for us to stay with the van and when it came closing time they managed to get the wheel back on and push us into the yard for the night and laid on EHU.
They got the new alternator delivered around mid day today and set straight to fitting it.
Upshot was the total bill came to £775 when you convert the euros.
Really pleased to be back on the road.
If anyone is ever stuck in Castlebar, Co Mayo Ican really recommend ARA Motors.

No issues with the airbag ecu ?
Did the starter battery recover?
No problems thanks Jim. We were on hookup overnight and battery back to full this morning.
When Carl at Northern Autotec fitted the new airbag ecu he said the new UK manufactured ones shouldn’t suffer the problems 🤞🤞

I take it the Halfway House is still trading? Bonkers the last time I dropped in😳

Glad you’re sorted. But my eyes are watering at that cost 😲😲😲😲

I’m too used to doing everything myself, and not having to pay out.
Back in the day undo three or four bolts and job was done. Ridiculous really the way these A classes are built where there is no direct access.

I changed the alternator on my Chrysler 300C.
11 hours inc a couple of coffee breaks.
Main dealer/factory route is drop front cross member and suspension to access from underneath.
I removed most of the front of the engine then wiggled it forward and up.

For all those hours labour I reckon you got a bargain.
Gone are the “3 bolts and 30 minutes” days!
