Heard an odd scratching noise in the night and discovered a little hole in the cereal packet and the odd very small mouse droppings. Oh joy! Now in the process of sealing food etc. any tips apart from mousetraps?

Don't get the sticky mats..
I'm no way squeamish and not a fan of mice but
I woke one morning to a mouse stuck on the mat my wife had put down...and it had tried that hard to escape its bones had come though the skin and legs dislocated etc and was still breathing trying instinctively to escape...poor bugger.

I put it out of its misery quick.

Humane traps work well. They will almost certainly be getting in under van. Had the problem twice. On the Autoquest the clutch pedal gaiter wasn't fitted properly. That was onty visible from underneath. On the Bessacarr, the little almost triangular grills at the bottom of the escutcheon that fitted over the front of the coachbuilt section where it fits the cab section were missing. They had gone up inside straight above the ceiling and nested in the insulation. Has to remove part of the ceiling to get rid of them.

Be warned, as fortunately was I, that if you put poison down, they crawl back to the nest to die and you then have an 'odour'!

Use a .410. A 12 bore would make bigger holes than the mouse does.

We are in the van touring spain, no idea when the visitor arrived but only heard it last night. Gone for a couple whackers, it’s got to go! Pass the Nutella…

Just park in a layby, when you get gassed it should kill the mouse 👍

I sealed in all the gaps under mine, apart from drop outs, when I got it ...I've only had them under the bonnet but I have a permanent raid trap near the air filter

So mister mouse 1. Tidewatcher 0

Have deployed two conventional mousetraps loaded with Nutella. Two viscous little Spanish ones with pre loaded bait plus Nutella and three sticky mats. You can hear him scuttling about above your head as you try to sleep. Not ideal. He left behind a fair bit of hair on the sticky mats but got away. So many traps about you have to think like a bomb disposal expert just to make a cup of tea. Sending me bonkers.

We had a mouse on board in Spain. One morning we heard click and the electrics went off. Found droppings, couldn't mess about and could only find killer traps. The Spanish ones are holes in blocks of wood, copper wire kills them instantly around the abdomen. Had 4 electrician trying to fix electrics but couldn't find fault. Returning home I sent the power unit off for inspection, was OK but guy told me to inspect data cable from control panel found tiny teeth marks, replaced and OK. Spent a fair amount of money and time which helped me to justify killing.

Sorry but the potential damage to wiring and systems makes it a real problem. Last night the Spanish nipper got him. First nights undisturbed sleep got three nights. Now able to store food accessibly again. No need to wash cups before use in case of mouse urine. Life back to normal. Not cruel just practical.

Did you find the way in though? If not I'd keep the food in containers otherwise you'll get another.

At least it won’t run away when you hit it with a hammer😒
Only joking.
I did find a small gap in our Hymer , under dash , back of wheel arch, it was between Fiat panels and I sealed that with sealant.

Van cleaned and disinfected, food storage revised with containers. Will be looking for the way in but first time in fourteen years we have had a problem. Not a reason for complacency though. We got away with it before serious damage, just nibbled containers and some of the ply backed trim but not noticeable.

Only time we had mice in our house kitchen was after our 2 cats passed on to the big hearth rug in the sky. Everything now in plastic boxes and all surfaces cleaned to within an inch of their life. Not seen sight nor sound of any unwanted visitors since.

Agreed. Totally justified. I reckon ours got in through one of the doors. Habitation or garage.
