In the middle of installing a Victron Orion 30A B2B my Hymer. I had planned to take the feed from the Starter battery by disconnecting the two cables from the Starter battery on the underside on my EBL (as I've read recommended on here several times) and diverting them to the B2B. But last night I had a thought - how will my fridge by powered when I'm on the move if there's no connection between the Starter battery and the EBL? Would I be better off running a new set of cables between the Starter battery and the B2B?

You can use a 30amp B2B in line with the EBL. It will take that no problem.

Just put the B2B between the starter battery and the EBL and you don’t need to change a thing. That’s how my 30 amp one is wired in.

I am pretty sure the fridge also has a separate supply from the starter battery rather than the cable at the back.

The fridge is powered by a seperate wire from the 20 amp fuse by the starter battery it goes into the front of the EBL it also does the starter battery charging from the EBL.

When wiring the B2B it is better to bypass the EBL, you need to take the starter battery cable out of the EBL to disable the split charge relay and you can use this lead for the B2B input but connect the B2B output direct to the leisure battery.

Thanks Lenny HB. I wasn't looking forward to putting some new cables in place.

If the control panel normally shows the state of charge (SOC) then bypassing the EBL will bypass the measurement shunt inside the EBL, so the reading will not account for the B2B amps. Not a big deal as long as you are aware, the voltages will still be accurate. Many panels only show the voltages anyway. You can fit a separate shunt battery monitor on the battery negative terminal if you want a proper state of charge reading.

Please make sure you mount the Victron Orion 30A vertically and leave plenty of room around it for ventilation. They can get very hot and then the charging current drops by about a third.

I always recommend bypassing the EBL because a few people have had the charge reduced considerably going through the split charge relay I assume this is due to carbon build up on the relay contacts.

Mine’s an older panel I guess as it only shows voltages. I’m fitting a Victron shunt as part of my installation so I can hopefully monitor my battery more reliably.

Exactly as you advised me whilst I was fitting mine....and it works fine..👍
