Driving Licence 2.webp
I currently have these categories on my UK Driving Licence. I am 72 years old, which meant to receive this licence I had a medical examination to renew when I turned seventy. Next year I will need to go through the same procedure (of having a medical) to get these categories on my licence as it runs out when I'm 73. My question is do I need all these categories? I have a Carioca 746 and plan on keeping it for the next couple of years. We've travelled around Europe over the years and plan to keep doing so for the next two or three years. I've looked at the UK DVLA guidance notes and found them unclear. Help would be appreciated.

Looking online, it looks like your Carioca 746 is plated at 4000kg, so requiring a C1 licence to legally drive it, which means that you will have to go through the process you did to keep your C1 at 70 if wish to keep and continue driving it. If you do not renew your C1 licence, then you will have to go for a motorhome plated at 3500kg or less.

What is your Carioca 746 is plated at for MAM ?

If they're going to put four different weights on the plate it would be helpful if they put something beside each weight rather than leaving everyone to scratch their heads!

Thank you for your responses, much appreciated. I do have another issue I'm afraid. My birthday next year falls at a time when we'll be travelling in mainland Europe. Am I able to apply for my licence early?

Yes, you can apply up to three months before your expiry date, and I would advise that you do as the DVLA normally take ages to process C1 renewals.

Also, would it not normally be metal?
Is that three months
Between 90 days and 56 days in advance you can apply with no new photo required.

56 days onwards a new photo is required.

DVLA were taking around 14-21 days to turn around applications and post new licences back in October.

Be aware, your new licence will commence from the date DVLA start actioning your application process.

Frankie's , you say “we” in your post. Does your partner have a C1 and could drive on your holiday if your renewal doesn’t come though? If your partner doesn’t have it or is unwilling to drive, ensure they are not on the insurance as the insurance company will expect a named driver to drive should you have a problem at any tine. Many people come on here and have fallen through that hole in the net.

Where does it say between 90 days and 56 days in advance, as I have only seen up to 90 days before ?

Normally 7 to 14 days only takes ages if you have medical problems.

If you go on line you can order the D2 and D4 forms from the dvla or pick them up from a main post office.
You can get a medical through d4 drivers it's about £50 and they should be fairly local somewhere near you. Just check on line.
The completed d2 and d4 medical checks are valid up to 4 months.
Once you have applied the dvla will then arrange a treadmill or injection. You ate covered to drive in the uk under section 88 but you need a valid licence abroad.

If your going through all the medicals just keep all categories

No chance of dvla messing it up start taking off and putting things could go astray

Log on and download a copy of the catagories licenced before send back your licence

You will need to reapply for your C1 licence or sell your van and buy one plated at 3500kg or less if you do not what to go through the C1 process and medical.

No factory is metal second ,if an alko chassis,is a sticker & 3rd would be the converters plate also a sticker. Then if you derated there would be a 4th et al.

Yes thank you. My wife is a named driver and has the necessary categories. Thank you for raising the issue.

Does your wife drive your MH or is willing to drive your MH, otherwise your wife be a named drive may cause complications if you become unable to drive while away.

This thread is worth a read if your wife is not willing to drive your MH.

Which link please, there are several ?
As per my previous.

Section E on the notes on the D2 form.
You must include a photo with your application if:
  • you are renewing your licence as it is due to expire within 56 days or has expired (the expiry date of the licence is shown in section 4b of the photocard licence)
