Tyre Pressures

So we've bought our first 'van - a 2003 Burstner t605 on a Ducato 2.8 chassis. Gone to check the tyre pressures and found all the tyres were 59 psi. The label on the inside of the driver' s door says they should be 79.5 psi all round. Max tyre pressure on wall of tyre is 69 psi. Phoned our local caravan/ Motorhome service centre and was advised initially that the 79.5 was correct but then he asked what was on the tyres. He said to put 69 psi in them and they would fine. Is he right??

79.5psi all round will make your eyes wobble and your fillings fall out.

First check axle weights on a weigh bridge then consult tyre manufacturers website for correct pressure.
If the tyres are Michelin camper they will always say 80psi on the rear but most of us run at under that. Fronts are usually much lower.

The markings on the sidewall are for the American Market.
Many years ago I had a new, road legal off road type motorbike and the tyre marking stated 'not for highway use'

59 psi is probably close to the right pressure. 80 psi is far to high as stated above.

Sounds like someone has decided to fit a set of cheap tyres or just fitted what was available. MHs are loaded most of the time so rear pressures are normally 80psi while front ones anything from 50 psi upwards depending on weight of axle when fully loaded.

To be safe you should load it with all your normal gear, including passengers, fill with water and Diesel and get down to a Weigh Bridge its the only sensible solution. You can then make a discussion based on facts rather than peoples guesses. After all it's your life at stake not theirs.

Thanks for that link Ed. Seriously useful information which all MH owners should use! Tyre pressures are not set for a comfortable ride only, it's a major safety issue and consequently a compromise.
