We were travelling on the M4 in South Wales a few days ago in our car and were travelling ( at a good distance) behind a commercial van. We were both overtaking a motorhome that was travelling in lane 1 when suddenly there was an amazing shower of white debris and bits of tyre flying all over the road.
It was obvious that the moho and a burst tyre that had previously filled with foam because of some earlier damage. I don't think that the moho was speeding excessively so probably keeping to the recommended 50mph.

We felt a very slight bump underneath our car from a piece of tyre but the commercial van seemed to be quite badly affected. Everybody seemed OK so we carried on after stopping, there wasn't much else we could do. Our van didn't come with a spare wheel but we carry a tyre in our backbox.

Are you sure it was the motorhomes tyre. ....if the van in front was badly affected handling wise it sounds more like it was the van, not motorhome.

Recommended 50 mph for motorhome on motorway, Haven't heard that one before.

Ah yes thank you, I read that the wrong way 50 mph if its been repaired with foam

I carry a spare so I didn't realise when one sprays gung into a tyre, it turns to foam?

I thought what it pumped in was some kind of latex that through centrifugal force coated the inside of the tyre and air pressure force it into puncture.

As they say, every day's a school day! 😄

It looked like foam to me but I suppose it also looked like bits of white
expanded polystyrene.

Are you sure what you saw wasn’t white polystyrene???

Like the white polystyrene that motorhome manufacturers use to make/insulate the bodies with.

As the tyre failed, it may have caused a lot of damage to the vehicle

Yes a shredding tyre can rip out the underside of the wheel arch pretty quickly.

You are correct.
