Type 2 Diabetes

Forgive me if this sounds like a silly question but for me it’s not…

So, if you had a naughty weekend and stuffed a fair bit of chocolate and ice cream and happened to have a blood test (yearly test for blood pressure) later in the week might it come back saying your sugars are a little high..???
Yes it may however, they should warn you you are borderline and do another test in a months time.

I was diagnosed with type two 3 months ago , from the first blood test to the second it dropped through changing diet since then I've reduced my carbs intake considerably , lost 11kg so far

Very little bread , no pasta and I've started buying this from costco to replace potatoes , don't know if it's available elsewhere

I buy the cauliflower rice but have never seen the stir fry.

A friend of mine struggled all of her life with her weight then she was diagnosed with type 2 and dropped the carbs and the weight just fell off her. She was never that fat in my opinion. But she is so thin now and so happy. She always looked nice and I always told her that. I think she is too thin now but would never say that. She is happy with the way she looks (y)

Your HbA1C measures your average blood sugars over the course of 2 or 3 months so if you really have only had one naughty weekend perhaps for a wedding then it’s unlikely to have had too serious an effect. You won’t be “caught out”. However if it does come back as high that means that you have a genuine problem, you can’t blame it on that one weekend. It’s a very sensitive test, much more use than a random blood sugar(RBS).

Thank you carolyn i have a blood test now and again for my blood pressure and got a letter from my surgery saying that my hba1c was a little high and gave me a load of bumf about eating healthy… however they said we’ll do another test in a year (annually) so they can’t be that worried about it could they..? Or they would get me in to discuss..? As it happens I am at present on a diet as I’m around a stone heavier then I should be and want to be and usually eat well and healthy with plenty of exercise as I’m waiting on a triple heart bypass…😱 it all sounds bad but apart from a few aches and pains of being 62 I feel great and thinking I’m 21 most of the time…

Chocolate and ice cream is my down fall and usually only eaten once in a blue moon but a few weeks before the blood test I did pig out on a fair bit like two large bars and two tubs of Häagen-Dazs ice cream…😆😋

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes last year. I always thought we ate healthily so the quack said "try stop eating potatoes". So I did. I stopped potatoes, bread, rice, pasta - you know, all the lovely things in life! But 6 months later my follow up blood test said it had completely reversed. The doc even said my blood sugar levels where better than his!

Incidental to this I also lost 2.5 stone and a rash I'd had on my chest for DECADES with no diagnosis had completely vanished!

I try to keep my carbs around 20g a day but occasionally I go over. You can buy low carb bread (it's ok at a push, but expensive). I tend to swap out celeriac for potatoes, blended cauliflower for rice and courgetti for noodles. I cut out milk in tea but I'll have a dollop of double cream in coffee (double cream has lower carbs than skimmed milk - yes I know it all sounds backwards!). There's tons of forums and FB groups covering the subject including the Dr Berry videos someone linked in this thread. Although he's from the US it's still all valid info.

My wife has found double cooking pasta, (cook, cool reheat next day) has good results especially when using wholemeal pasta, also using bulgur wheat instead of rice, also in France there is plenty of pastas made with lentils, pea and chickpea, although we find that the lentil ones tend to taste better.

One thing I'd say is its the level of control that in my experience together with ensuring good blood pressure control and not smoking which influences how likely you are to get diabetic retinopathy which is a good thing to avoid as it could affect the ability to drive in the future have a really big effect on lifestyle could involve unpleasant treatment ( it used to be the biggest cause of visual impairment in people of working age until modern treatments came about). Luckily I don't have diabetes if I did I'd try to find a medical person I trusted and take their advice rather than research on the internet. If that advice was it's really time to go onto insulin I would having seen the consequences of trying to live in dental.
