Picking up our first motor ome end of April. One thing we know nothing about is the best aerial to have fitted...We don't watch a lot of tv but would like the ability to watch Freeview type stuff if possible. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I think ours is made by Avtex and its a base loaded screw on whip. Very neat, some people say the reception is crap with them but we've always been able to receive some channels.

Any half decent directional aerial will do.
Search Google for motorhome aerials.

Don't be tempted by the cheaper '''flying saucer' type omni-directional aerials...status 315 etc.....
Unless you are very close to a transmitter mast they aren't very good.

Our Hymer has a whip aerial similar to the Avtex with an amplifier get very good reception of digital channels all over Europe picking up 48 channels in Spain at the moment.

We have a Status 570 and it works great, picking up free view channels very well.
It has a signal strength indicator so you know which way to point it too.

Did you have problems with the Hymer aerial?
I know they changed to the external whip aerial a cuople of years ago to improve performance.

I don't know if you can buy those now - did you find it for sale anywhere?

No sign of an aerial when we viewed it so Lowdhams agreed to fit the Status.
They have been standard fit on all Hymers for at least 10 years sounds like Lowdhams don't have a clue to what they are selling. Up to about 2 years ago the aerial was mounted within the front overcab, you will probably find the cable for it behind a draw or cupboard near the TV probably a white cable with an F type connector on the end. There will also be an amplifer as well so you have to enable antenna power on your TV for it to work.

New to Hymer then we didn’t have a clue either, having had a roof mounted aerial on our previous van. Not surprised about Lowdhams though after three years experience of them. The Status aerial is good though.

The pic I put up was from an Australian Web site, but I didn't look for very long. Best way to search is on Google images, then "visit site"

Yup tried that, and lots of other ways too, can't find them for sale here as they seem to be an old style model, the Aussie one is 215 dollars which is roughly £120 so expensive anyway.

We don't have a fixed aerial but an Avtex stick-on one which has very good reviews on-line and also from other funsters, not that we've used ours yet as we just watch DVDs or pre-recorded stuff. :D

The one I saw was 79 dollars plus whatever they quote for shipping.

Looks like it's store pick-up only as I can't get the shipping quote to work, but I suppose contacting them might be best to find out for sure, if so it's about £40 plus P&P.
