I’m 70 in the summer and fully expect to have problems getting the C1 part (coronary artery disease on my medical records). As I expect to not get the license with C1 until next spring we are going abroad for a couple of weeks at the end of September. Is it possible to apply for a “normal” license to hopefully come through in a matter of weeks whilst still applying for the C1 part which will inevitably take longer. We are going as a party of six and don’t want to leave all the driving to just my brother in law.

I believe you can get your normal licence and then later apply for C1 but I doubt you can split the application into two parts.
I would apply for the normal one now just to be on the safe side. Then, if you still want C1 apply later.

There are people on here more expert than me so wait for their input first.

I applied on line for my licence renewal at 70 which came back within a week. I then had a medical filled all the forms in & sent off for my C1, keeping hold of my normal licence. At the time I did not have any serious medical problems so C1 came back quiet soon but if I had to wait at least I could still drive abroad, limited to 3.5 tons With the first licence.

We had a similar issue. My C1 application was in being checked by the medical dept . I phoned the dvla and requested as we wanted to go abroad in a vehicle less than 3.5 t if they could forward a temporary driving licence to cover which they did it was valid for a year.
It did take a while to get through on the phone though . (y)

But could you drive over 3.5 tonnes in the UK while waiting for the C1?

Yes you can it's under a section something or other. Can't remember the name but perfectly valid until you get your c1 or its turned down ( but you are not covered abroad)

If you have had coronary artery problems they will probably want you to do a stress test. After my heart attack and stent last year I had to have a stress test before I was cleared to drive over 3500kg again. I was ok to use the B part of my license after 2 weeks. As soon as you reach 70 the grandfather rights lapse and you become subject to DVLA Group 2 medical requirements.

Is there a particular phone number to speak to someone helpful?

The numbers I used were
03007906806 licence queries
03000830104 medical section.
I would try the first one initially.

D4d is a lot cheaper than your doc and you will still need a treadmill test or equivalent either way.

I’ve tried the treadmill test at the gym. It’s the pain in the back of my legs that stops me getting through the third part! it’s a lot easier if you can hold onto the machine but that’s not allowed I think.

What helped me on the treadmill was taking an mp3 player with earphones and some upbeat music that I could sing along to in my head. And keep up the pace especially in the third section. Stops your mind wandering as well.

I passed my treadmill test but the last 3 minutes were tough and I am downsizing to avoid having to do it again. The Doctor supervising the test said most people of my age (72) failed to complete the required 9 minutes. I guess they are usually testing people with heart conditions so this probably doesn’t mean everyone of my age would fail. The older you get the lower the maximum heart rate allowed gets so it is only going to get tougher with getting older.

What is the 3rd part guys
At each stage, the gradient and speed of the treadmill are elevated to increase work output, called METS. Stage 1 of the Bruce protocol is performed at 1.7 miles per hour and a 10% gradient. Stage 2 is 2.5 mph and 12%, while Stage 3 goes to 3.4 mph and 14%.

It doesn’t sound too tough but I was surprised by the third stage.

I can run for 45 minutes on the (flat) treadmill (thats 5km so not fast!) but it's the incline that gets you. I've got a few months yet so will train with the incline in mind.

I applied to renew both my normal licence and my C1 at the be ginning of September last year as both of my licences run out at the end of October. I was told that the C1 renewal was taking a few months as the DVLA were backed up with applications. My normal license came back quite quick and the C1 finally came back at the end of November as the DVLA requested that I have another eye test as I have glaucomer in one of my eyes. So all in all it didn't take as long as I thought.

I applied for normal license first as was running out of time for going away then when we got back I applied for my C1 had to use own GP as D4D had no appointments £85 for filling a form in "disgusting " got to do all over again in 4 months time.

I didn’t know you could have separate licenses, all my groups B, C1 etc. appear on one licence with the same licence number. It all shows as one license online.

You are correct. The first one excluded the C1 but once they agreed to renew both I got another license with both on. Bit of a waste I suppose as I had to throw the first one away.

D4D may just fill in a form, mostly with information you give them. My GP spent 45 minutes going through my medical records and discussing them with me as she completed the form. Yes the GP is more expensive but they have all the information and are expected to be accurate. D4D don’t have access to your medical records and if they get something wrong it is your fault for not telling them. D4D is little more than self certifying as you do for ordinary licences and it makes me wonder why the DVLA bother with the D4 medical report.

I renewed my license at 70 but let the c1 lapse, but have now decided to renew it at 71, I have my medical booked for Saturday morning with D4D, not overly concerned with the treadmill test as I’m out walking everyday with the dogs minimum 5 miles but usually 7/10, where I may fail is the eye test !
Not particularly bothered but as I will be buying in the next few months it makes a difference to the weight of vans I can consider.
