On a 90 day tour soon and hoping at some point to cross border from Bulgaria into Turkey for about 8 days before carrying on to Greece. Currently insured with Caravan Guard who provide European insurance and breakdown but they don't do Turkey. Can't find any UK firm that will do cover for this short period. I believe that you can buy third party insurance on the border but would like peace of mind with a fully comp from a Uk firm. Anybody come across this problem?

You may be able to buy insurance at the border but I suspect it will effectively be road traffic act only

I understand that Saga cover Turkey and Morocco for traffic accidents etc but not breakdown in either country !!!!

I have just phoned Saga and the chap I spoke to said that although they might be willing to provide a Green card for travel to Turkey at the moment for an additional fee he wasn’t sure if it was something they were going to carry on doing. It’s not on their list of countries covered. We are up for renewal on the 6th of March and travelling to Turkey in September. I said I didn’t think I’d bother !! He thought that was probably wise, it’s interesting though as they have been covering Turkey.

Waiting to hear back from NFU because they have been covering it and the Car policy does and I know the Motorhome cover is just a modified version of that but there are a few variations. Fingers crossed.

Just heard back from NFU and Turkey is covered, phew. Green card is free, just request it nearer time for duration of trip.

Might be worth a call to LV, as I think that's where a few of the "Van Lifers" on You Tube got their cover from, one of them managed to get their visa extended to allow a longer stay whilst they were over there.
Check out "Overlanding Sophia" on you tube Turkey.

NFU, I’ve just edited my post and yes it’s covered as standard and you just request the Green card nearer the time. What a relief. £402 which I thought was OK. NFU breakdown doesn’t cover Turkey.

Breakdown is the next thing, Nationwide cover it apparently on their flex plus account or Driver guardian. We have travel insurance with our Lloyds bank account so don’t really want the Nationwide but I did do a quote with Driver Guardian and thar was nearly as much just for the duration of the trip!

I did wonder about opening Nationwide Flexplus for a yes but not doing anything extra on the travel insurance bit but I’m not sure what would happen if sods law we were actually ill and tried to make a claim on our Lloyds but also had a Nationwide running at the same time but hadn’t extended it or added health complaints.

Is that fully comp as I said they won't even cover Croatia fully comp so I wouldn't expect them to cover Turkey.

It says so in the documents. Full cover in Turkey but still the minimum in Croatia, Macedonia,Serbia, Montenegro , Morocco, Albania, Bosnia, Herzegovinia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and Tunisia.

Maybe Croatia will change soon.

I just had to have a look, very strange.
It is surprising but a relief , especially for people like us who are so useless. We are due to pay the next installment of our trip shortly and when Saga said no I started having second thoughts. I know some people are very casual about insurance and that’s great fir them but I’m afraid that’s just not us.

I’ve got a quote from Driver Guardian and it’s £144 for the year and it covers Turkey and the whole of Cyprus. That’s for trips out of UK up to 90 days. Our trip will be about 60 ish. The RAC was way more and only for the trip and it didn’t cover Northern Cyprus, only the South Howard H
I think we’ll go with that rather than risk messing up our Lloyds Premier insurance which has never caused any bother , by taking out the Nationwide Flexplus as well.

LV will provide a Green card for Turkey, fully comp.
Many car recovery policies do provide cover in the European side of Turkey, not on the Middle East side.
Interestingly enough Fiat Assist do cover Turkey.

Can you give info on these “many” recovery companies as I certainly can’t find them and yes I’m looking for the European side. LV charge for the green card now, the fee depends on duration, they were going to be my next stop. Adrian Flux cover Turkey but they have had some bad reviews on here!

I was with Britannia Rescue ( through the Civil Service Motoring Association) until I purchased my new motorhome and took the extended warranty through Fiat Assist Which covers the whole of Turkey. I think my previous recovery company was linked to Green Flag.
Previously I was covered in Europe but south of the Bhosphorous no cover.
Some years ago I recall the RAC gave similar cover ie European side not Middle East.
Much depends on how they describe Europe.
Yes you do have to pay for a Green Card for Turkey through LV, I have done so for the past 6 years or so, it was never “free”
At least LV is fully comp.

Thankyou, I’ve just looked at Green Flag and they cover Turkey and Cyprus. They haven’t split Cyprus like the RAC did either and were cheaper than Driver Guardian. The RAC only cover Southern Cyprus. It’s a real minefield though, at least it’s a tour and the leaders speak Turkish, in fact the wife is Turkish.
I will phone to double check Cyprus.

Happy days - Just received a quote from NFU which covers fully comp in Turkey and is £50 less than our Caravan Guard premium although it does not include breakdown cover which I will arrange spritely

I found them so helpful. When I went back to pay my £402 I’d printed off my NCD from Comfort and weirdly they’d saved my NCD from SAga even though they said they hadn’t on the phone so I had 10 years instead of 5 so NFU immediately recalculated and it was £387 instead! Such nice people in the Sherborne branch, I would expect nothing less of course!

Confirming Carolyn's information, I enquired with (again, very helpful staff) at NFU, and was advised they would provide comprehensive motorhome cover for Turkey on a factory built vehicle. However they would not insure any self-built conversion without an engineer's survey report. The scope of this report wasn't discussed in detail but the inference was that it would take significant effort to obtain. Looks like locally purchased third party cover and defensive driving for us!
