Thinking of taking a single ticket on the tunnel and maybe taking a return on the ferry from either Santander or Bilboa what does the collective think , do others do it this way or return the same way .Thanks

Go and come back whichever way you want

personally we go tunnel as the missus can’t do the sea at all

and we always book one way 😉

Does it really matter what other people think, just do what you want to do.
Mikeco, not bothered what people think! was just asking if some people do it that way

The only thing I would say is take into consideration the sea condition in Biscay on the return trip. In the winter months it can, not always, be choppy.
Vermeil man, possibly coming back around early June so hopefully the sea will be kind as not the best sailor.

We did tunnel out and then ferry back from Santander in October/November. Hideous weather in the Bay ofBiscay but still very convenient and would do it again. Would recommend!

We like the drive down through France so on the Newhaven/Dieppe ferry both ways.

We booked one way on our first trip a few years ago, soon found that that was a mistake when we booked to come back, it was loads more££££. So we always book a return now because we found it costs a lot less to change the return booking date if we want to come back on a different date.

Check your insurance, some require pre-booked return ticket

DITTO..

We always used to buy singles out and the return single a few days before we came back.
Then someone mentioned travel insurance and there it was in the small print, "return trip must be booked" so check. (y)

Did the Portsmouth/Caen out, Santander back trip years ago. Like Lenny HB we enjoy France so the quick trip through northern Spain was not enjoyable at all. I know you can go inland for great countryside, but the motorway through the Basque country was through industrial wastelands. Wouldn't do it again despite enjoying ferry journeys however rough they are!

We’ve done it that way or in reverse several times over the years and this August we’ll be doing Plymouth to Santander for niece’s wedding in Spain, then overland to Bregenz on Lake Constance for the opera, before returning via Dieppe to Newhaven. Personally I prefer taking the U.K. to Spain ferries at the beginning of the trip as we find it’s a great way to start a holiday - but then again we’ve never experienced a bad crossing of the Bay!

When we go over for a quick 4-5 day trip I book a return but when it’s a long trip I normally book the return a week before we decide we are coming back.
Although it is easy to change the dates for return I believe.

Yes.
I have an online account with the tunnel and have changed dates and times without any charges.

Probably easier to book a return for roughly when you think you will return then change and confirm a few days before👍

I do however leave the booking to the last minute so end up paying more☹️☹️
Should get myself sorted and book early but sometimes we decide the week before that we are off😁😁

Yes, we have done Tunnel out in March and Santander ferry back in May. Both crossings were pre-booked for insurance purposes as others have stated.

We usually only book one way, as we never know when we want to return.
