We are thinking of taking the Stena line ferry, Harwich to Hook of Holland. We have a Jack Russel.
There seems various travel options for our dog :-
1) The pet travels in the Moho for the 6-8 hour crossing. It is not certain if you are able to access the Van to walk the dog during the crossing.
2) The pet travels in a cabin with you.
3) The pet travels in a Kennel.
Has anyone had experience of doing this. We would appreciate which method you have / would use.
There is obviously a cost implication for options 2 & 3. Option 1 is no use as our dog cannot go 6-8 hours without a toilet break. A cabin crossing price is circa £499.00 !
Also any recommendations for a local stopover near Harwich the night before if required.

Although we don't have a dog, we travel this route quite often..

1. No, you are not allowed access to the vehicle deck whilst at sea.
2. Yes, they do have pet friendly cabins. (you can book a cabin for a day crossing also)
3. Yes they have a kennel area that I'm pretty sure but not 100% you are NOT allowed to go to once at sea, there is a tv channel in the cabin tv so you can see the kennels

until the end of January, Stena have an offer on, make sure you enter the code NEWYEAR23

we have booked a day crossing in June, £270, 8m 2 travellers.

for a stop over we tend to use the port itself, park over on the left away from the check-in booths, ignore the no parking signs, done this at least twice a year for the past 6 or 7 years with absolutely no problem. toilets are open till late and open early. plenty of space to walk the dog too.

The daytime crossing is shorter period to leave them, Harwich was our closest port when we lived in the UK, our dog doesn't worry about the time, when we crossed over to Ireland it was 4 / 5 hrs and a bit rough, we get the same welcome regardless, I'm not saying she likes it because she shakes on the train. 😁
But probably preferred it being in bed in her van than the kennels.
We was told on the dfds Dunkerque that we could visit the dog just ask a member of staff, but think it's better we didnot because she would expect us to stay. 🤔😁 Bob

We did Harwich to hook off Holland with our dog in January 2022. He was in the kennels, there wasn‘t the option of the pet friendly cabins at that time. Our dog is very laid back and when we boarded, we used one of their provided quilts for the bottom of the kennel, and used one of his own blankets on top so it would be more like his place. We gave him his dinner in the kennel. He had eaten his dinner and gone to sleep in the short time it took us to go to the cabin and check on the cctv! every time I checked on cctv he was asleep. You can visit them whilst at sea but we didn’t, as we didn’t want to unsettle him. We went down as soon a we woke in the morning to take him to the toilet deck. At the time, it was his first trip abroad and he was 6 months old. He was fine both directions. The Kennels were clean, and they were a good size for the relevant sized pet. Our dog had the largest size as he is a big dog. I wouldn’t have wanted to put him in the kennels if he was a nervy dog but I knew he would be fine.
