a class 890 hymer
Hi, we have done (May to July 7 weeks) Spain and France in our 9m 5.5 Tonne tag axle Hymer. Next week we are on our way again to Croatia on an 8 week journey using up our remaining 90 days Brexit allowance transiting through France, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, settling in Croatia for these counties however I am confused???
Can anyone please advise:-
1) do I need seperate vingnettes for each country ?
2)Do I need a Gobox (Is this instead of a vignette?) only for Austria ?
3) Do I need emissions stickers for other than France which I have a Critair yellow sticker?
Thanks to those who reply.
Happy camping!!!

We are in Croatia now in our 8.7m, 5700Kg tag. We travelled down a similar route, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.

For ease, we obtained a toll box to use the motorway network for both Austria and Slovenia, as we are also towing a 4m trailer with scooter.

You can purchase the boxes in a service station near to the border. Very easy and simple, the cashier did all the inputting for us 😀

Thanks that’s great info. We leave in 2 weeks time, we are similar size to you. We have an Austrian go box but will probably buy a sloven one there.

We are not keen on campsites normally but appreciate their need, has size been an issue? Hate the palaver of dodging trees, hedges and small walls etc some sites have!

we re currently in Italy, going through to croatia tomorrow. we came down throug France belgium, luxembourg , france, Switzerland and have only paid €58 in tolls, 8.6t. Weve been on Motorway/ dual carriageway nearly all the way btw.

Tomorrow we will pay some more Italian tolls (but they re) cgeap and then go from Trieste to Rjieka using the A7 also seen as E61 because its not part of Slovenia toll network.

We wont buy the Austrian Go box because heard too many stories about them fining people anyway (some firsthand) so will only go through Austria if we can go non motorway with no hassle.

We always plan our route ahead of schedule - we mainly use ACSI and Search 4 Sites apps, enter the relevant filters for size and axles to find relevant sites that accommodate our van size.

We then emailed the campsites and gave them our dimension (14.2m long including trailer) and asked if they have a pitch minimum of 10 x 8 m2, with min 10 amp electricity available for the dates we required. Also asked if access roads were easily navigated. All came back with relevant info, some with pictures of the pitches etc for us to chose.

Only one had an overhanging tree that was easy to manoeuvre around.

Keep in mind that some of the sites are expensive and that a lot of the ones you see along the side of the road pack them in like sardines and it is very hard to manoeuvre a large van in and out of!

Happy travelling! IMO, Croatia is a gorgeous country, with gorgeous people and stunning, stunning scenery.

We’re in Croatia now, krk island. Set off Friday 12th. Our 4th time in Croatia and probably the last time we’ll come in August. Motorways through Germany and Austria were horrendous. Stop -start, worse than Uk. Came off the Austrian mway to go over the hills but was no better, added about 3 hours on to our journey. A fellow Brit in Rosegg said it took him 4 hours to get through the karanvanken tunnel. So we were up and off at 6am and straight through, only to join a massive queue at the Croatia border. Dreading leaving KRK as there was a massive queue to get off the island. Ps. Nowt special on KRK. Originally booked 7 nights at camping pila, but leaving after 3. I can only describe it as looking like a refugee camp. Clapped out caravans and tarpaulins everywhere.
Going back up to novigrad where we’ve always stayed.

Thanks so much for this Dave, very useful! How much did they cost out of interest and do you have emissions stickers? Enjoy!

90 on then 90 off for European Schengen areas, Croatia operates its own 90 on 90 off so this I believe can be done in addition to the European Schengen areas as Croatia does not fully join Schengen until next year??? Hope I'm right or I'm in trouble ???

Lots of that on the smaller Croatian campsites often set in pine forests. I prefer these to the 500+ pitch monster sites though 😟 of which there are plenty.

I really enjoyed Krk, I don't know the site you stayed on but Stara Baska was a fabulous site in 2018.
I agree that unless you can get to an island easily as in Krk, I don't think the islands really offer a lot more than can be found on the mainland. Pag was similar. So I don't think the cost of getting to islands on a ferry is justified.
Others may disagree of course.

We too enjoyed Krk, also at Stara Baska in June. We never had to queue to get on OR off the island, quite a pleasant drive tbh

August is the busiest time as the whole of Europe goes on holiday, absolute nightmare….

I must have driven 40-50 thousand miles all over Europe including to Dubrovnik and have never bought a vinegar, crap air or open the surprise box anywhere… I don’t do toll roads either and have never had a problem….

I have used a toll road in France once by choice…😎

We are just north of Dubrovnik, Camp Pod Maslonim. A nice reasonably basic but very welcoming site, clean facilities, bar up the hill, bus stop outside if you do not have other transport.

Also visited camp Kate today on the bike, which is just south of Dubrovnik. We are thinking of maybe going to Montenegro for the day on the scooter, and this would make it easier. It is another nice basic site. Both are full by the mid / end of the day, but it is August.

We have been here for almost two months now, and loving it

Slovenia in particular is easy to avoid the tolls and at those prices I think I'd do the same with Austria.
I know there are horror stories of people being diverted onto motorways and fined but I think that's rare and the exception especially in summer when no passes are closed due to snow

I went to Slovenia non toll from Austria then thought I would pay for the toll from Bled down to Croatia.
Paid at the service station and not on the toll road very long when we got diverted through little villages due to toll road smash up🤬🤬
Coming back I just drove on the toll road and have not had anything from them.
Same as Austria, big line of traffic waiting for Gobox at the toll station so just drove through😁😁
Not sure if they can find out who you are now but that was in May so hopefully won’t have anything through the letterbox 😁

Exactly, we all have our choices to make 😁

At over 14m long, I prefer to take the easier, less stressful routes sometimes 😁. However, in France I never use tolls unless around major cities where it pays to do so.
