Anyone done this recently?

Does the dog need any vaccine papers?

No nothing is required entering Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland and visa versa but documents are required coming directly from UK to Republic of Ireland ( eg Holyhead to Dublin, Liverpool to Dublin etc) but no nothing is required from Northern Ireland into the Irish Republic

There's nobody to check nor any border to speak of.
As suggested, see common travel area.
If your dog doesn't have a pet passport it's worth getting one whilst over there.
I got mine at the animal hospital in letterkenny for about 40 euro. The vet transferred the rabies vaccination data from the defunct UK PP.

Am I correct in thinking that, since Brexit, a pet passport etc is also now required if the ferry docks in Northern Ireland?

When we crossed at Stranraer, the ferry operators showed no interest whatsoever about the dog. We meandered our way to Donegal and got a new Irish passport at Carn vets.

No, we travelled into Northern Ireland from Scotland twice last year with our dog and no documents were required or checks made. AFAIK the situation remains the same, but will change shortly- see https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...provides a,Northern Ireland pet travel scheme.

Ah! I've confused myself then! I thought the EU travel arrangements that were brought in after Brexit included Northern Ireland because of the lack of a physical border with an EU country, Ireland.

Thanks for the link.👍🏼 The Windsor Framework simplifies things for us when taking our kitty to Northern Ireland.

Further to my above response to kingmid, once we are in Northern Ireland, and if we decided to travel into Ireland, does getting an Irish pet passport negate the need to adhere to the EU travel arrangements?
If so, how much was the passport you got?

Sorry just saw this now
No, no pet passport is required for entering or leaving Northern Ireland
Thank for the reply, CaptainPaul 👍🏼

But our kitty will need papers/passport if we then decide to cross the border into Ireland, won't she?🤔

There are no border checks at all at the border crossings. In fact sometimes the only way you know you've crossed is the roadsigns showing kilometres.

Being a bit dim….. does that mean I can go from NI into Ireland and then get a European dog passport which will then negate AHC’s for future trips elsewhere in Europe?

No as long as you arrive in and leave via Northern Ireland you don't require any papers passports etc, but as many others have done get yourself a (Ireland) European pet passport while your visiting the Republic of Ireland, then you can come and go anywhere you wish in Ireland, Europe, or wherever you wish to travel with no hassles

Yes, exactly what I did in 2022

Thanks again for the information. That's good to know; it's means doing that just once will negate having to go through the AHC process, and paying the vet, each time we travel into Europe.

Recently I had an email from Stena regarding the new Windsor framework for taking pets into Northern Ireland starting in June this year. Possibly worth a read.

A good few years back, but when we took our cat from Liverpool to Belfast I remember needing paperwork.
Presumably because there are no border checks on the island.
Looks as though that has changed.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Yes, getting an Irish passport for the dog negates the need for an AHC. On returning from the EU, you still need to get a vet to sign off on a worming tablet and then the checks at Calais or wherever are like the pre Brexit days.

When we had the passport at Carn vets, I asked her if this was common practice for her. She replied that she was doing up to 3 a day! It cost €50 for the passport and whist it hadn't expired, I got a booster done too and that was also €50.

There is another Donegal vet recommended on Fun regularly. I phone her but she had run out of passports!

Terry

Carn vets are my vets in Ireland for my dogs. I too have Irish pet passports issued by them. They were doing a huge trade in them when I got ours. They put my Irish address on them as that's what's on their files. They would have put my English address if I had asked. No problem parking the camper nearby either.
