On my last long trip in the summer the engine (a 155hp 2.2D TDCi on a 2014 Trend, done about 40K miles) went into limp mode a couple of times, but was fine after stopping for a few minutes.

When I got home I took it to the local garage, but their diagnostics didn't show anything. They said the test kit at the Ford main dealer was better, and they might be able to get a code out of it. It was Ok at the time, so I left it.

Over the last couple of weeks the service light has come on briefly after a few minutes of running, but then goes out.

Options? Do I spend a lot of money and take it to the dealer so they can hook up their tester, and find out if there's anything actually wrong? I thought the diagnostic codes were public, but does the official Ford kit do something that the after-market testers can't do?

There is a difference between most makes and a generic code reader. I have a ford capable reader and they are prone to issues with the sensors spewing erroneous faults to do with dpf and adblue. Even a cheap OBDII cable from ebay with the ford specific adaption tends to work for most.

Thanks - I got the same advice on the Transit forum - just download FORScan and get a cable. That's got to be worth £20/whatever.
