Hi,

I am picking my motorhome up and have asked for a price for supplying and fitting an alarm and tracker. they have offered me a Cobra Cat 1 4198 alarm and Scorpion Track VTS 5 Tracker for a combined cost of £999. Do any of you kind people know if this is good value, or is it classic Dealer over charging?

TIA.

You will get lots of differing views on this subject, but the majority of alarms are not motorhome specific, they will do the job to a degree but can be easy overridden by a semi professional crook!!
My choice of alarm is the Vanbitz Growler alongside a Meta non starter, supplied and fitted by Vanbitz in Taunton. eddievanbitz is the owner and fellow funster on here and is only a PM away from any advice you may require, he even gives a discount for paid up members on here if you tell them you’re a member at the point of BOOKING in. The alarm is really loud (5 sirens) and can be set so you (or the dogs) can move about freely inside without it going off (just remember to turn it off before you poke your head out the door in the morning)!! The non starter is used via an app on your smartphone enabling you to shut the engine completely so it won’t start, and also has lots of other features such as a tracker (but it is NOT a call centre tracker).
Also good things to have are VISIBLE deterrents such as steering wheel locks and pedal locks etc.
There are lots of choices out there, you pay your money and take your choice!!👍

Thanks for the advice. I've just messaged eddievanbitz and am awaiting his reply. I'm actually picking my motorhome up from Chelston Motorhomes who are based Wellington Somerset, not too far from Taunton so hopefully I can get my van sorted by Eddie. Thanks again.

You won’t regret having the Growler installed, better with the Non starter as well👍 The after service is second to non, plus you get a free night at Cornish farm (we usually have two nights there) 👍😉

Vanbitz are going to put all the security and extras we need on our new van in April.Wouldn’t have anyone else do the work given the choice. This is our second van where they have done the extras, nearly 6 years on from the first van,no problems whatsoever. Highly recommend.

Due to the value of our MH we had to have a tracker fitted for insurance although an alarm wasn't required but we got it thrown in as part of the purchase deal (FOC), so were happy with it:

Tracker: SmarTrack Protector Pro Global TQA453 - it cost £199 to have fitted at our home and £399 for a lifetime subscription.
Alarm: Autowatch 695 (canbus) - we've had versions of this previously on other MHs/campers and never had any issues with them so more than happy to have one on our Carthago; would probably cost about £400-£450 fitted.

One thing to watch with trackers is the cost of the subscription service for the monitoring, some are expensive and can really add up to quite a bit of dosh, this is why we plumped for a lifetime subscription rather than paying a yearly fee.

We've had the Autowatch alarm on a few MHs/campers and never had an issue with it.

I've had Autowatch fitted just to satisfy the insurance company. Mine cost about £300 from the local specialist.
I wouldn't waste a thousand pound on a van alarm - there is very little of value ever left in the van.
No tracker. I've fitted a failsafe engine cut out switch.
