I think the question should be what weight of trailer is my motorhome capable of towing, this will show up on the weight plate.

Here you go. :)

Category BE

You can drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on the BE ‘valid from’ date shown on your licence. If the date is:

  • before 19 January 2013, you can tow any size trailer within the towing limits of the vehicle
  • on or after 19 January 2013, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 3,500kg within the towing limits of the vehicle.

    Cheers,

    Jock. :)

Thank you. We read that, only someone we know said we had to have the c licence to tow anything over 75k with our 3.5 ton vehicle. I just wanted someone to confirm we had read it correctly

They are talking rubbish.

A post 1997 category B Licence only allows for a maximum trailer weight of 750Kg.

You have a pre 1997 Category B and BE Licence, so you are well catered for trailer weight wise. (y)

Many cars have a tow ball nose weight restriction of 50 - 75Kgs, but other than that, I don't know where they got the 75Kgs trailer weight restriction from. 🤷‍♂️

HTH,

Jock. :)

Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats.

You can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM.

I stand corrected on that one, and apologise to EllF for being out of touch with that rule change. 😦

Jock. :)

I only knew because the lad and all his mates were taking towing tests because they do off road stuff and the rule changed before he started lessons much to his mates disgust as they had paid already 🤣
