Hello Funsters
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter .
A quick question to all those who tow a car behind their motorhome. We holiday mainly in the uk with our MH . I am considering changing our van to a tag axle which is around 9m long . Has any got any experience towing with such a long van and a tag axle ? I have heard that traction is not always good in wet weather with a tag . A car on the back would ,I guess make this worse.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thank you

We have a tag axle 8.5m motorhome behind which we tow a 4m trailer with over 300kg in it (motorbike & gear). Don't even notice it is there, apart from long up-hills and MPG drops. Muddy fields are always best avoided!

Go for it.

Not had a tag or towed with one myself, although I do tow a car with our 9m+ motorhome… BUT, just today, I was talking to a chap with a 9m Swift tag jobbie and he has an Abarth on a trailer. He’s had a bit of a nightmare as he asked me to look at the various plates as he can’t understand his axle and train limits.

Well let’s put it this way, he’s running overweight (to be proven but almost 100%) and he’s total is more than his 6T train weight and his trailer and car exceeds his 1500kg tow bar limit!

It got worse when he showed me all the gouging on the tow bar where he was bottoming out getting on and off the ferry at Portsmouth and Santander…

He’s towards the end of his three month Spain trip and he’s only had the Motorhome since December 2023, when it was a new purchase.

And his garage (storage area really) has a sticker showing max 150kg when towing. He’s got double that in wine he’s taking home! 🤦‍♂️

Many ‘ooopses’ all round really! 🤣

Ah yes . Most 9m vans with a car and trailer will have to be careful with weight. I believe the fiats have a slightly stronger payload than the Mercedes.
