Towing A Motorbike Trailer

IMG_1496.webpIMG_1598.webp
We had an MP3 with dedicated Armitage trailer. Used it for last couple of years it was superb. Opens so much more to you getting around. Trailer is short so reversing is tricky but doing it slowly makes it easier
Really miss it but had to sell due to wife having accident that has affected her balance and can not be trusted on pillion now
Try it out with second hand trailer I’m sure you won’t regret it ( trailer makes excellent bbq table😂)

We are in the middle of Spain as I type...been using a Motolug for last 4 years...first with a BMW F650 now with a Triumph Tiger 955... the Motolug is a brilliant piece of kit in my opinion... it tows really well, it tilts so easy loading.. I have actually got pretty good at reversing it now too but on the odd occaision i have got stuck it unhitches in seconds and is so well balanced i can push it out of the way easily... reverse the van and hitch back up again and be on my way in a minute or two... but the best bit about it is it completely disassembles in about 10 minutes flat and can be stored away if needed.

I liked the look of Phoenix trailers when I was considering one, mainly because they have big wheels and are weight rated far in excess of what's on them. The last thing you want is one of those little trailer wheels blowing out on a Spanish motorway.

I have also considered a trailer but worry about security. Will someone steal the trailer? I assume you use just campsites? What about day trips in the van? Do you leave the trailer & bike at the campsite ?
Loads of trailer security available.

Get an Alarm loop fitted on your van.
Good not only for the trailer, but also cycles either on the rack or on the ground, Plus BBQ, Table, Chairs etc.

Use the massive bike chain when not attached to the bike to attach trailer to tree, or a 5-10m Kyrponite canoe cable lock.

Wheel clamp. It lives on the spare tyre when moving, on the road tyre when parked.

Tow balls. Locking to your tow ball when on the back, and also locking to a tow ball lock when not.
Tow ball socket covers, handbrake locks.

Trackers, getting your postcode welded into the cross frame.

and I'm sure many more.

Just make sure it does not exceed your plated towing weight!

An empty trailer weighing say 500kg, but plated to carry say 4,000kg can not be legally pulled by most motorhomes even empty.
It's not the actual weight that matters (as long as it's less than the plated weight), it's what the plate on the vehicle and the trailer say.

I’m posting some pics but to see how it works you need to look at the appropriate vids on YouTube.
Don’t confuse it with a hydralift thing, this is a superb piece of kit.
As Jim has already said ,trailers tend to hold their price (they don’t wear out too much) so the money invested is not lost.
To answer the op , a motorbike and trailer open up so many opportunities it’s well worth doing in our opinion.

Yeah, I can't figure out why they invariably make the wheels so small. I've done 25k with my Tickner, and it's great but I wish it had larger wheels. With primitive suspension that should improve the rough road behavior, and the hitch height would be better for a van.

On the Motolug you can specify larger 10in wheels .... which I did..
