Hi I have a VW Transporter T6.1 with a pop up roof I want to put a Thule top box on it. I was wondering whether there would any problems with lifting the roof with box on. Total weight approx 40 kg when loaded.
You won't have an issue with the weight in terms of the roof's limit as long as your roof is a decent make. My SCA 194 roof has a load limit of 70kg. Obviously you have to also factor in the roof bars/rack, and anything else on the roof such as solid solar panels, which I'm assuming you've done.
However, you may find you need to uprate your roof's gas struts. I wouldn't be inclined to do that unless you have to, as anything which will make the roof easier to raise is likely to make it harder to pull down! I'd fit the bars/box and see how you get on in practice.
Personally I'd be keen to unload as much as possible out of it before raising the roof. And I'd be VERY careful to pull it down evenly, as the extra weight could cause you problems if you pull down asymmetrically, and potentially damage your hinges or make the securing clips/straps not line up properly. For that reason I'd always fit a top box centrally on a pop top rather than having it fitted closer to one side or another. But maybe I'm just over cautious!
