not long enough
I haven't bothered updating my Tom Tom maps for a while but get annoyed by the message telling me how long it is since I did

So today I did, almost instantly recalling how long it took last time and why I hadn't bothered since

But I have paid for 5 years upgrades so became determined to see it through

Apparently I needed an urgent GPS software related upgrade, plus western europe maps, voice options and I decided not to bother with speed cameras as I really get annoyed by the bongs and being a car version it doesn't warn me about 50 on derestricted roads and 60 on dual carriageways where I am most at risk

So, about 12:30 today I connected, to check for updates, that bit was quite quick, then set to download, it jumped to 50% done and 3 minutes remaining , result, clearly the super fast broadband I am paying for really is super fast (y)

But no, the 50% remained unchanged and the time gradually went up :(, it took a full 5 hours to download

Then when 100% done, it verifies which seemed to take forever

Then bugger me it still has to transfer from lap top to Tom Tom  predicting another 55 minutes

At least it over estimated that bit and half an hour ago confirmed all done

However I still have a vivid recollection of the first use after last upgrade, I was told it is more than 12 months since last update?? excuse me, I have only just done it (but that was last time, stay positive David)

By now I am sure most of anybody still reading has already got the replies sorted, there will be a few who might have replied before reading to the end, telling me to bin it

Well I am in full agreement, but it is bought and paid for and I am familiar with it, but we are well into evaluation options for navigation on phones and or ipads already, if I get a message telling me to update the first time I use it next, it will be on for sale for first offer over 50p

they are expensive, stupidly hard and time consuming to update

and dry January isn't helping either

I would have loved to have been able to say "it could only happen to David" shame I can't, updating all satnavs is a pain in the butt.

Garmin are a PIA as well I hardly ever use it now but if you don't update it within 15 months you loose your lifetime updates so I updated it a couple of weeks ago.
Used to take 3 hours but with the 50 mb/s broadband we now have it only took half an hour but only got half the maps. Poxy thing tells me the file is too big you need to put an SD card in the unit, for now I just download the Western Europe maps.

Mines the same, around 7 hours to download, and I think the same way as you.
Mine came with lifetime updates.
The last 9hour total update had nothing which affected me.... Voices (I only use one) Western Europe maps (only use UK)
3D buildings (turned it off, looks nothing like real life) and a few other things..... Could have bloody cried, what a waste of time.
I don't bother updating now..... How many new roads can they build and new by-passes.... Well they have things called signposts with direction arrows to show you which way to go. . (remember those?)
TomTom was great when they were using the 'borrowed' software but since they got bollocked for using it and had to write their own its real gone downhill.
It took 2 years of updates to alter one major junction north of whitby to a roundabout.... I reported it as an altered junction regularly as I'm sure many others did and 2 years is taking the piss
I paid good money for a terrible experience but it won't get binned til it breaks

My Tomtom takes the same time to do the upgrades so I set it off when I go to bed and leave it working hard while I sleep. I like that.

Now I know it doesn’t need a prompt at each stage, if not binned, I will do the same next time ?

when you watch it take hours to get there it would be soul destroying to find you had to acknowledge something to continue ?

that has just given me an awful flash back, I seem to remember after last update the file was too big and I had to pick France or Spain ?

really hoping that was just a bad dream, if not sale price will be offers above 5p ?

Oh. How disappointing. I was hoping someone had come up with an express way to update a TomTom device. n a madcap moment, I started off en update around 20.30 one evening and was still waiting until the wee small hours for it to finish. I thought that was because I was on a 3G WIFI moden.

I have the same problem with our fairly new CMC version Avtex Tourer One (Garmin) in that I have the app installed on the laptop, I check for updates, it tells me that there are some crucial and not so crucial ones available to download.
I connect the Garmin to the laptop, it warns me not to disconnect during updates (fair enough I think) carry on, the progress bar is telling me approx 55 minutes to download, but at the slow speed of 50/55 KBS it takes a lot longer!...like 3.5 hours, during which time you are told that your Garmin device is not being charged by the USB port on your laptop, as its a data transfer only & not charging.

I always make sure the Garmins internal battery is fully charged before connecting to the laptop for updates, this takes hours also, so I leave it charging over night.
It then tells me at the end of the download that its been successful, however also recommends that I need to instal more memory on a seperate SD card, which IMO should be already supplied with the device, bearing in mind the extortionate cost to buy it.
Not good is it?
From having two sat navs over the years, I much prefer The Tom Tom, the verbal instructions gave more info. Simple commands like join the M6 for 126 miles,& travel along M4 for 7 miles to junction 12, whereas The Garmin just says "Join The Motorway" not telling me how long for, it also says take 2nd exit on roundabout, but doesn't mention that the roundabout is miles up the road, and you will crossing 2/3 traffic light junctions before you get to it!
If anything spoils our travels and creates undue stress in the van, its The Garmin, I now partially ignore it, write down towns and motorway junction numbers to join & leave from before we commence a journey.

PS: When the Garmin Churps up and suggests that she can save me 20 mins on our planned journey, select a new route?.....ignore it, it will take you miles out of your way, and probably take longer.

We've had our Garmin for several years and, just before our present hold. I updated it.

Yes, it took forever but on using it. the bl##dy thing insists on taking forever to get around to get going once the address or coords have been put in.
We have also found ourselves coming across several roundabouts that have been installed years ago that the Garmin has seemingly no knowledge of.
All together, not a brilliant piece of kit.

Funny isn't it ? how years ago people used to ask me, what Sat Nav you got?
I said, I've Got a Tom Tom.
They said, Nah! their crap!, get yourself a Garmin.
Well I did, and guess what? Yea..... its even Crappier.
Ask any HGV euro driver, he will say the same about his "Lorry Version" and end up using Google maps for more accurate stuff like estimated travel times with live updates etc.
So I Guess they are all crap, just have to be sensible, if in doubt, stop, get paper map out and use google earth to check entrances etc.

My Tom Tom go camper connects to my Wi-fi all by itself.
I go to the update in settings click on it and it’s done in about 15 min. That’s for the whole Europe map.
My Tom Tom start 25 with life time maps will not stay connected to my W10 laptop so I have to use a geriatric W7 machine then it takes the rest of my lifetime to update.
I've always hated the start 25, it lives in her car with the other junk now

CamperContact which links through to Waze and its stable mate Google Maps when out and about. We had a major road change near us recently and both showed the changes immediately with no manual intervention. All we need now is for them to produce a motorhome variant which I would probably pay for but apart from downtown Rouen, I can live without that.

In the past I've found that TomTom devices work better with the TomTom computer application when the device is connected with the original supplied cable and in an on-board usb port and not a usb hub. I did this recently and it was the fastest method for updating.
It didn't really matter because my Start 25 decided that it didn't ever want to locate another satellite ever again so I binned it!

The main advantage for me was to add custom poi's to TomTom devices such as Camperstop or Acsi sites etc. For car use I just use the TomTom Go app on my Android phone, much more reliable than CoPilot which was becoming increasingly bizarre in routing.

The problem with TomTom Go is you can't input custom poi's so I'm using an app called SendtoGPS.
I just open Google Maps and add the name/coordinates of the campsite/aire to the search bar. When the map appears with the marker I finger press the marker and locate the share icon at the bottom. I then navigate to the SendtoGPS logo which then opens a page with a list of share options, I choose "Google maps-other" and then select the TomTom Go icon. I then select "Add to my Places", give it a name and I can then navigate to that place when I want to.

It sounds clunky and time consuming but it means that I don't have to:
spend £200 roughly on a dedicated device that I will probably only use in the motorhome and
spend time searching for and downloading custom poi's for the dedicated device.

Well!!!!!! after reading All the posts, and ditching my old Tom Tom, I wonder if my Tom Tom go on my iPhone 7+ is superior!!!!!!!! I have had tom Tom on my previous iPhone 4 for 2 years then when Tom Tom said they could not support it anymore, they offered me the Tom Tom go for free for three years !!! So I accepted it onto my new iPhone 7+ and have had it for just over 2 years now and is the best I have ever used giving me all the info I need when driving including visual too. When they have informed me I have an update waiting I update it and it only takes about 20 mins but all depends on internet speed, but it completely wiped of all the maps and completely downloads all the new maps and I have the whole lot, all of Europe and Russia etc etc and the update is normally about
8gb long só a lot of information but all done in about 20 mins !!!!! So having on my phone is the best thing I have done with my Tom Tom and swear by it !!!!!!
