Toll tag in france

So glad I came across this thread. I'm pretty new to the site, and we're going to France in June for the first time in our MH.
What is the benefit of having a toll tag as opposed to just paying cash at the tolls?
We are first timers abroad & ordered our tags on the Eurotunnel website, as they had an offer on. I'd apply 2 weeks before you're due to travel, as they say it can take up to 10 working days to receive the tag. Once you've got it, you have to activate it as confirmation that you've received it. We've set up direct debits, so the bills are taken care of whilst we're away.

I expected to get a class 3 but received a class 2, so who am I to complain? Did think it may flag up on the first Toll Booth but it worked like a dream ::bigsmile:

An added benefit is being able to drive through without stopping, as long as you're doing under 30KMH. A German van passed us 3 times on the Bordeaux/Bayonne run & each time we passed him queueing to pay, as we sailed through the drive through lane :coolest:

May I ask all for toll/tag advice? Our driving in France has been limited and thus far, no tolls encountered! But that may change and maybe i need to be prepared. I understand cash works (even in Covid times?), but do regular plastic cards work too? If all else fails, can the team recommend any tag card that's particularly good for very infrequent use?

Yes, I always use a U.K. issued debit card. Sometimes you have to insert it to pay, sometimes there’s a contactless pad to tap it on.

Although we try to avoid tolls, when we have to use them we always pay by card. We have a credit card we just use for this purpose. Swmbo pops it in the machine,,it comes straight out and the barrier opens. Not quite as quick as a tag but almost. Have never attempted to pay in cash, that must be a pain.

We used to pay by CC or DC years ago but changed to Tag thing for both France and Spain to go straight through. Mainly because in the busy times one can get held up in traffic and peoples card not being accepted or machines broken and just general it's more convenient.
Entering or leaving some of the big citys when the toll is only a couple of €s it's just as quick to drop the coins in the basket. (before we got the tags)

Be careful if using a uk card. Some charge steeply for each transaction and it certainly adds up by the end of a holiday. Tag for we passed so many other vehicles yesterday that had passed us due to our tag, and using the 30kmh lanes.

Thank you for all those tips everyone. I don't see us ever being in a great rush so the occasional wait (to pay by credit card) will be acceptable. Sounds just the ticket. Er, no pun intended!

We used to pay by credit card until one was deposited in the cash despenser that went down well as you could imagine 🤪

Another vote for ATMB, looking forward to using it again , last week in May plus first two weeks in June.
