Hi All,

I'm in Santiago del Compostela at the mo, and thinking of going on to Porto and the Douro valley.

Do I need a GoBox? or equivalent, or should a toll pay card do? I've tried looking on the iNet but I'm not sure if what I'm reading is up-to-date?

I only expect to be in Portugal for about a week, I'm cutting back from the Douro Valley to try to get back to Leon and Potes in Espania. Which was my original intention but the weather has forced me south, if you get my drift.

TIA

Gerry

Thanks Martin, the Easytoll with my Credit Agricole card seems to be the way.

If you choose a major motorway crossing there should be a lane off to the right for foreign vehicles. Drive right up to to the barrier and enter the details into the ticket machine. The system will read your vehicle number plate as you drive on the motorways and should bill your card directly.
Not sure what you do if you enter the country on a non-motorway road. :)

PS. I couldn't get their website to work but perhaps it does now. :)

Thanks DBK, I'll be on the E1 Vigo to Braga Autovia. I don't do complicated when transiting, the Douro valley is a different matter.

Electronic tolling only applies on the so called SCUT motorways, all the others are a take a ticket type where you can pay in cash or with card as you leave.

DBK beat me to it!

Portuguese toll roads use two different systems.

1) Some toll roads use a system where you pay a person in a booth or put money or card in a machine as and when you use them.
2) Some are electronic only with no booths/barriers. Instead your number plate is read and the charge is applied to your vehicle.

Type 1) is easy, just pay as you use.
Type 2) are shown in red on the map links below. For these some kind of registration or prepayment is needed. The easiest way is to register a credit card against the vehicle. As you enter Portugal from Spain on an electronic toll road there are signs asking foreign vehicles to register. These direct you to come off the road via a slip road that takes you to an unmanned machine. Your vehicle registration number is read as you approach, then you put your credit card in the machine and your vehicle is then associated with that credit card, so any use of the electronic toll roads gets charged automatically to your card. To do this you obviously have to enter Portugal on a road with one of these registration points though rather than enter via a non-toll road. There are other ways of paying which other members of the forum can hopefully advise on.

Are you sure you even want to go on toll motorways?
We are over in Portugal quite a bit most years, and we find the national and regional roads far far more interesting and scenic.

I crossed into Portugal on the motorway from Ayamonte/Vila Real and registered my number plate at the machine. I was OK on the motorways where it is electronic only but when I travelled further North there were ticket booths and lanes marked Aderentes. I have always used the booths until now but I think I am actually entitled to go through the Aderentes lanes where I don't have to stop - am I right? I don't remember seeing the word or logo for Aderentes used when I signed up.

I agree that the smaller roads are a better bet most of the time, but occasionally you can save a lot of time and stress by taking the toll roads.

The road the OP mentions is the old system... pick up a ticket and pay on exit.

I recommend having some cash with you because some of the exits are unmanned, especially later in the day, and if Mr Machine doesn't like your card it can be awkward.

Thanks JJ I'm with a French bank Credit Agricole so it's Euro based card and won't have problems.. But a good heads up for those using UK based or pre-paid style cards.

In Portugal some banks do not support non Portuguese cards even if they are in euros, very common with supermarkets and auto petrol pumps so be prepared. All multibanco machines accept any card

No, they are for vehicles fitted with a an electronic gismo only available to people with Portuguese bank accounts.

That link seems to tell you everything but the price?

From what I remember they were pretty cheap -- cheaper than Spanish toll roads anyway. There is a calculator here if you can be bothered:

We found a few alternative non-toll roads in Portgual in an horrendous state, but maybe we were unlucky and/or they've been fixed now.

The main problem we had when registering a credit card was that the system hadn't read our vehicle plate, so we had to press the button on the machine to talk to a person (who spoke good English) to mkae sure it was processed correctly.

I know how much the toll roads cost, it is the cost of the Sanef tag that is not included in the link(y)

follow the coast down to porto.
mind you can go all over and never use the toll roads .
most toll roads seem to have a none toll road next to them.

In the long term the easiest way, although not the cheapest, is to get a Bip and Go electronic tag that works on all Portuguese and Spanish tolls. You can get one from Sanef who have an office in Yorkshire dealing with UK clients. If you have a Eurotunnel booking or frequent traveller account you can book through that and save some money on charges. We got one earlier this year and it has worked well so far on our trip.

They also do a separate one for France and we have one of those too.

Wish I'd got one before I left..not going to be home until Xmas...

Used the Sanef and Bip and Gonthis year worth every penny no stress and no hold ups Would definitely recommend them billed each month on what we’ve used. No problem at all and your dealing with a company in the u.k if you did.

What is the initial cost and rental cost, if any, of the tag?

I have asked before but nobody wants to tell me and the price doesn't show on the website, at least not until you have filled in a lot of personal details.

If you ring them the numbers on their web page between 10am and 3pm
They will give you all the details this is what I did unfortunately can’t access the information at the moment.

Forgot to add we used our Sanef, Bip and Go tags travelling over 5000 through France Spain, north and south Portugal worked every time.

£10 initial fee waved if going through Eurotunnel plus £20 returnable deposit for the tag. After that it is £6 per year management fee, reduced to £3 per year after the first year if you go through Eurotunnel plus £6 per month you use it but only up to £12 max. Plus of course the cost of the tolls. You have to pay all of that for each tag, i.e. once for the French tag and again for the combined Spain and Portugal one.

I've recently driven Santiago down to Sives via Lisbon.
All those tolls were ticket and manned booth. So no issues. Around €50 IIRC.

They look at your rear - I'm class 2.

Driven back up through Spain and toll free all the way to Santander.

presently in Aire at Somo using their wifi.

Big boat tomorrow - hope less rough than trip down.
