Although i'm setting sat nave to avoid Tolls i'm also working on the fact that STUFF :X3: will happen so can anyone enlighten me first hand how Portuguese tolls work please ....

Appreciated Ken

Pay as you enter as there are machines that you can enter in your vehicle info or just get a toll tag and don't worry about it. Emovis or fulli are 2 that I know of that cater for Portugal etc

If you enter half way down Portugal I have no idea how you pay

I have a 2.1 in getting it wrong and a PhD in totally buggering up the way to use them, so no. However, we have driven through and around Portugal countless times with our SatNav set as to avoid tolls and never come unstuck. Incidentally the non-toll roads are so good and quiet I would never consider paying to use the auto routes.

Very difficult to avoid all tolls.

There are two kinds: the kind where you take a ticket and then pay on exit, and the kind that only works off ANPR.

For the second kind, if you're entering on a main route (e.g. the crossing from Spain over the Guadiana in the South) there is a sign immediately after the border which tells "estrangeiros" to turn right into a toll area. There you can, at one of the booths, enter your credit card while the system records your number plate.

Then you're set for a month.

Thanks guys, have watched a couple of YouTube videos and it does seem like it can at time get a bit messy.
Im all for non toll roads ..you see so much more of the country ..
think what I may do is to hit a "foreigners toll station" register my card and van and use that as a fail safe just in case we accidentally hit a ANPR toll rd .

Easiest way is to just get a tag such as emovis or fulli, you register your reg no, then you can use the fast lanes with no need to stop to take tickets or register your credit cards.

No toll roads, I set on the satnav, which in Portugal can be a problem as mine could find no alternative and led me astray. A couple of months back home and a bill for £40 settled my dilemma. You can pay afterwards by internet or visit any
Portuguese Post Office and pay but you must wait 3 days for the data to come through.
The other roads vary from good to diabolical but motorways are excellent and under-used, I am not sure why.

There’s two sorts of tolls in Portugal- the usual sort where you take a ticket and pay on exit. Just don’t go through the “via verde” gates unless you have a suitable device**

The other are the “electronic” devices. They are “non contact” they read your number plate Check your weight and your height and charge you. To avoid problems all you need to do is link your number plate to a credit card.

You can do this at various points in Portugal or on line before you arrive.

Just go here

It is simple and has worked for us for three years

But the registration only lasts for a month , so you have to renew every 30 days.

** a via verde transponder or one based on the emojis or fulli services mentioned above - and based on experience :crying: don’t go through the via verde gate without one. Cost me >45 firs €7 euro trip. :crying1::crying1::crying1::crying1:

In early spring this year, we stopped at the Easy Toll registration booth as we entered Portugal from Southern Spain. We registered our credit card correctly, and were billed for almost all of the electronic/anpr tolls, but we still received a fine for one electronic toll that for some reason wasn't charged to our credit card (we were correctly charged for another toll on the same journey/ motorway).
The fine came from a UK based parking/toll debt collection company. We tried to appeal but got nowhere so ended up paying the fine. I'm not sure how to avoid this, but might try a tag next time.

I’m waiting for a fine for going through the via verde gate in November! We had registered, but just got confused (easily done!) - we learned our lesson but too late! I wonder how long it will take to receive the fine? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Many of the local locals (as opposed to the upcountry internal tourists) I know in Portugal never go on the toll roads. It's almost like they don't exist - just not part of the psychological map.

And a high percentage of their journeys are quite local so it's easy enough to avoid tolls.

Similar to some shops/centres - you get the ones the locals use, the ones the foreigners frequent, and rarely do they intersect.

Over time this starts to make sense.

So they buy an item from their local dealer who they have known for decades and whose father was a trusted chap around the place. He will, if anything goes wrong, source the spares and ensure it gets repaired.

(A chap who did stonework for us was the grandfather in the family business. His son did the cutting and his grandson brought and installed the material. We were referred to him by our electrician (father and son electricians, of course), who was of the grandfather's age and used to know the grandfather's father well. If you screw things up in this world, it will be remembered for the next 100 years. He's the grandson of the bastard of legend, they'll remember. If you march in and throw your weight around like a big, swinging foreigner you'll just be blanked. It's all about who you are. So the foreigners mainly tend to live in a parallel 'shadow' world. Nice restaurants and golf courses. Friendly natives.)

But if you buy glossy French tat from say Leroy Merlin you're pretty much on your own. So they would normally use it only for certain purchases, and rarely if Pedro down the road could supply it. They'd struggle to live down the shame of breaking the code of reciprocity.
