I am considering towing a car on a trailer, to make life easier when away.
Noting that our current car weighs over 2.4 tonnes and we bought it to tow a 2 tonne caravan.
Thought process:

  1. The Rapido can only tow 2 tonnes so we would have to change the car.
  2. Hang on, the Touareg can tow 3.5 tonnes. The Rapido is 3.5 tonnes fully loaded so would probably weigh a lot less with nobody in it and provisions in the car.....
  3. Yeah. That would make it a caravan with a motor in it. What is the point of that???
As I said, stupid idea.

LittleGreyCat i think thats a sensible idea, increase your options. Whats a caravan with a motor mover. Another off the wall idea, find a really cheap car hire place and stick that on the trailer. (in the dim and distance i found local garages hiring out 2-4 year old cars for small beer in comparisson).

We have a Rapido and when away just rent a car for a few days £100 for 3 days in Dorset, £150 for 5 days in Devon. I have always used a local hire company who will normally either drop the car off and pick it up at the camp site or collect you.

You could probably buy a cheap little runabout for less than the Tuaregs fuel bill!
Ps then sell it when you get back.

I wouldn’t think that a Toureg has anything near a permitted gross weight (combined tow vehicle & trailer) of more than 6 tonnes).

As someone who has had both, I can never really see the benefits of towing anything with a M’Home other than perhaps a boat?. It took me a while to get the right balance and now it feels about right - 9m MH plenty of space for 2, can get into most places without too much difficulty & a large garage containing an electric Piaggio scooter (125cc equivalent with a 50 mile range) for when you stay somewhere for a few days and need to get about independently.

We used to tow our Goldwing in a trailer because we enjoy riding not for the convenience. You couldn't do that with a caravan.

Actually you could! 😃. A chap who had an Isetta bubble car adapted his caravan so he could put the car inside then on site he removed the car and was able to use the caravan.

I do the same. Always a local hire company nearby.

How about this then - our site today in Bavaria - this parked up next to us. Your post gave me an idea - we could comfortably tow our tiny 9m, 5.5 tonne Hymer behind this 26 tonne monster and then use it as a runaround for when we are parked up. Be useful for restocking the wine cellar etc.

Meant to add these

The demise of bubble cars (before I could buy one!) is one of the greatest tragedies of 20th century transport.

Dethleffs actually made a caravan specifically for taking a m/bike in. The rear wall dropped down to make a ramp and there was a clear space in the centre wish lashing points. It obviously didn’t take off as I only saw on it their website very briefly.

We usually try and book sites with handy bus stops or near train stations. Have done the hire car thing but found it very expensive. We also once bought a smart car but fatmrg and the aa set it on fire so that didn't work either.

That is a story I'm sure we would like to hear!

Just buy a small car
Mercedes Smart car, Renault Twizzy EV, or get a classic like a mini or Fiat 500.

Or get a low loader and put the motorhome on the back
