To cover or not to cover?

Probably discussed befor but not able to find a thread!
What is the consensus on using a winter cover on new 'A' class Hymer?
Does it do more damage than it does protection?
Not required for storage reasons as will be used all year. Today's 'dirty rain' seems to always have a freshly washed and polished vehicle looking sad and dirty in no time at all.
Views really welcomed to pro's and con's.

The general consensus is not to use, they cause damage in some cases. You need the van sparkling clean before putting it on.

I spoke to a guy recently though with an old 1960's classic caravan, beautiful nick, he said the reason its like that is that it gets covered every time he gets home, so its worked for him.
