To cope with Spains new reg’s re phasing out of warning triangles.

i believe this is it

QUOTE!!
Twenty people lost their lives in Spain while placing their emergency triangles on the road in 2020. As of July 1st 2021, the V-16 emergency light is supported by Spain's Traffic Code, although it won't be obligatory for drivers to have one in their vehicles until January 1st 2026.
Ah, but how many died with covid ...

Seriously, the statistic means nothing unless you know the details. Were they wearing high viz, were they in the roadway, were they already displaying hazard warning lights etc

I am all for increasing road safety and reducing injuries and deaths, but sometimes statistics need to be delved into.

I picked up a beacon in a Spanish Carrefour a couple of weeks ago for €10. They're cheap and easily available.

I was simply quoting a Spanish car Web site for the benefit of questions asked.

So don't get why you are having a go at me over statistics you may not agree with.

Always the same people want to go to another country then complain about respecting their regulations like the beacons and angles mort. It's pretty simple either respect the regulations or don't go. It doesn't matter whether they're a good idea or not.

I apologise if you think I was having a go at you, I wasn't, I was making comment about the information.

Best wishes

How does the 'signaling the emergency services' bit work?

I may (or may not) be driving down to Portugal in my car this year.

Thanks for this, its a good idea for the UK as well as anywhere else, particularly if your electrics fail on a dark country road. I've ordered three for £22 from Amazon (GoGoIT 3 PACK LED), going to put one in each vehicle.

A square of plywood with a piece of metal glued or screwed to it with 4 suction pads. Job done, that’s what I use on my panoramic roof. My beacon cost £7 eBay

I have got no real problems with these new beacons. I have always been unconvinced that the little triangles do any good as they are difficult to spot, especially at night.

Are the beacons that are in the shops now fully compliant with geolocation and ability to link to the phone using bluetooth requirements, and is there an app to do that? If all the answers are "yes" I will have a look at buying these when I am next in Spain. Otherwise I will wait until closer to 2026 to buy fully compliant ones.

I'm obviously missing some part of the logic here. The idea of these beacons is that you put your hand out of the window and locate it on the roof. It replaces the idea of walking back to put out a warning triangle which is clearly dangerous. However, surely the advice is NOT to stay in your vehicle if it broken down at the side of the road, but to get away from the road and well on to a verge if possible.

I think that still makes sense, but at least you don't have to walk 20 meters back up the road in traffic or even the dark.

The beacons are a great idea especially for motorways and other relatively straight roads. However on narrower twisting roads between hedges the triangle placed strategically before a blind bend gives some warning. I will carry both.

We will need to carry both anyway because this only applies to Spain. The remainder of Europe will still require the triangles.

i have just ordered some from amazon, they can come with suction pads, for once Spain seem to be introducing something that could help to save lives

Which raises the question about whether the DGT organisation is only responsible for Motorways/Main roads or for all roads.

Those of Spanish knowledge please educate us.

You are warned when you hit them. It does require that they have been placed at the correct distances though, 50m & 200m behind so as to give you time to swerve.:giggle:

Not in spain.

All.

if it says "V16 homologated" they must be compliant.

If compliant they must have the following specifications.

  • water resistant
  • IP 54
  • Consists of a flashing amber light beacon, with more than 2 hours of autonomy in emergency mode, and another 360 degree white light that is used as a torch and has a working time of up to 5 hours.
  • Suitable for marking the location of cars and bikes in an emergency situation.
  • Connects without wires or switches, it works through contact with metal.
  • Uses high quality LEDs to ensure that the light is visible from 1 km away.

Gus, what about the geolocation and bluetooth to link to an app on your phone and contact emergency services?
