Hi again funsters, another question,
We seem to have come to the conclusion that LHD or RHD is fairly irrelevant.
The 3L engine was a clear winner over the 2.8
The manual/ auto gearbox not such a clear winner, there were folk on both sides of the fence, although quite a few of the problems appear to be associated with vacillating feet in traffic.
Now to the headline question, to chip, or not to chip, I am thinking economy here, as the 3L appears to have adequate 'welly'
Over to you folks!

Do you actually mean to physically chip i.e a plug in tuning box or do you mean an ecu remap?
Either way here are a few previous threads that may be worth a read through.

And your answers will be along the same lines as the auto/manual question, loads of people on both sides of the fence. Unfortunetly it is only you yhat can make and live with what you chose.
The good thimg is you dont "need" it done before you get the van and you will probably be happy with the performance so you just need to moderate the right foot and drive it for eco mode and you may find you dont need a chip/re map at all.
After all most of those that have done it did it for better better driving charactoristics.

Whichever is the best is probably the answer to your question.

Whichever is the best is probably the answer to your question.

I fitted a diesel tuning box with several presets to a Vauxhall Frontera I had and set it for increased torque as I was using it daily for towing for my business.

When we bought our present van I went for a Quantum remap which has increased our torque with a marginal increase in fuel economy.
More than anything it has reduced the amount of gear changes with the extra grunt.

I understand the right foot completely, however as a Yorkshireman with deep pockets and short arms, I can only get the best out of what I have (going to see one tomorrow) but I do not know if it is possible to do better, hence the questions, measure twice cut once sort of thing :)

I am a strong advocate of tuning boxes and chips, if you understand the constraints that the manufacturers are under then you will see that the manufacturers put out vehicles with some room for improvement if the vehicle is operated in better conditions i.e. good fuel, average ambient temperatures, good service intervals etc.

However my feeling with the 3 litre FIAT is that it does a pretty good job, I had done a tuning box on the 2.8 JTD and that worked well but don't feel the need on the 3 litre.

After chipping one vehicle, I wouldn’t have it done again. The clutch and clutch pressure plates aren’t going to get any bigger or become heavy duty and regardless of what people say about cruising up hills, it’s a lot more torque going through something the size of a dinner plate.

I have the 2.8 and it’s plenty gutsy enough for me, but as previously mentioned, it’s up to you.

Another vote for Quantum remap on our 3L Fiat manual.

Often discussed on here. This is just one of the threads and is probably relevant to whichever engine you'll be getting...........

The problem that your statement does not take into account is that in the case of the 2.8 JTD (I don't think that was your chipped vehicle) the UK supplied version has less power than for other markets, I think it was something to do with having a smaller turbo because of the steering column on RHD drive versions.

So the clutch and drive train is quite adequately sized for up to about 150hp which I think was the power of the other markets.

I've had my Merc 3L V6 done by Quantum - because I could and not because it was needed. The engine is incredibly smooth at any speed and the torque increase is substantial. Power increase is 180bhp standard to 230bhp after tune. It's a 5 speed true auto and, at 65mph motorway cruising, never changes down even with a 2T trailer & car behind. Economy (if that's the word!) Is unchanged.
