It came about when Rolf Harris was convicted recently. It was decided to use his name as an item of jest. The thumb is the one he used whilst painting, to get true perspective.

Why do we usually see an abbreviation such a rofl and not a smiley?

Not wishing to appear too stupid where is your B button on the task bar? Below the B button on my task bar is something different

If it's a post from the old forum the smilies didn't used to work sometimes, when transferred over onto this one.
The B button the first button and is next to the I button above the camera button. Well it is on my ipad anyway.

As RnB say above. They are the bones of smilies from the old forum software which didn't survive the transmogrification to the new forum software.
