You may remember I have a couple of threads running with issues on my comfortmatic gearbox and my Truma. Oh and my glow plugs.
Couple of other small snags too.

In fairness to the dealers (well mechanic) he is trying to get these sorted for me. But it seems the dealers are just too busy for the size of there staff. They are selling Motorhomes as fast as they can. There is always a backlog in the workshop and to get even faults sorted is 2-3 weeks to book in for. Not much use when I have now spent towards £40k cash on my motorhome and just want to enjoy it.

As I say. I know the guy can only work so fast but I cant help thinking they should either hire more help or pause the sales side of stuff to allow things to catch up. Its just not good enough.

I started a timeline today in case I have to pay for stuff and claim back with a court battle.

What would you do at this point?
I keep hoping it will be better tomorrow but I know i'm kidding myself and this is going to drag on and on.
Only way I see is to just race ahead myself now with 3rd parties and pay the money if needed and ask for it back nicely then through a court if not presented to me in a timely fashion. Ive been paying tax and insurance for nearly 3 months now on something I cant use.

25/10/21 Collected Motorhome.

Fault with Glow Plugs pointed out at handover.

Used on maybe 6 nights over 4 weeks.

23/11/21 Truma Heater Failed before planned trip that day. Drove straight to Dealers to investigate (4pm)

Booked in for Monday 06/12/21
Used with electric plug in heater as on a C&CC site with EHU.

02/12/21 Dropped off for investigation/Repair

Contacted around 10 days later (awaiting parts)

19/12/21 Still waiting parts so collected to use without heating.

On collection a Gearbox fault presented itself (comfortmatic).

27/12/21 Collected Heater Parts from Dealer to try myself (no success) Next part ordered. Discussed Glow Plugs and Gearbox issue.

05/01/22 Contacted dealer again (still waiting on part) Drove myself to collect part from Manufacturer. Tried part with again no success.

13/01/22 Contacted dealer for update to be asked to send photos of boiler model to dealers to order new circuit board for Heater (process of elimination fault finding) 8 days after I assumed it was already ordered.

14/01/22 Message from dealers to say part ordered and to contact “retracted” to book in for Gearbox and Glow plug issues.

Did so and was Booked in for 31/01/22

19/01/22 Messaged dealer to say I was booked in with “retracted” and enquire about Heater parts.

20/01/22 Message from dealer to say part was on order.

28/01/22 Email exchange between “retracted” and dealers to confirm they were covering repair costs (Glowplugs and Gearbox) before starting investigation.

31/01/22 Motorhome dropped at “retracted”

04/02/22 Phone call from “retracted” to say fault found with Glowplugs (already snapped) but no info with gearbox yet (couldn’t replicate fault). Requested conformation who was paying. Advised email from dealers was sent to them already.

07/02/22 I called to enquire at progress. Was told still waiting conformation from dealers despite original email (they wanted to check due high cost)

07/02/22 I text dealers to get them to respond to “retracted”. Also emailed “retracted” to say please make a start and I will pay and claim back if needed from dealers to save further delay.

07/02/22 Phonemail from dealers to say he will pass me my RAC warranty details to make a claim from them for the cost. (never had details at hand over)

Ongoing with Repair…. Heater still waiting conformation of parts received to try after Gearbox and Glow plugs are fixed.

Spoke to Truma today also to book in myself at earliest appointment. They say they WILL be able to fix it. Just a question of what it will cost more than anything.

Re the gearbox, if it’s anything like the ones we had fitted to the ambulances, technically it’s a manual gearbox with an electronic servo/clutch/selector. They used to fail at the most inappropriate times (they never ordered anymore, new buys full auto/man only). The faults were mainly the servo and the gearbox fork selector not fully engaging.
I'm in the wrong game again - 10 mins with MES and a bit of straight road cures it for many '000s miles

Thats what id gone with in my head based on my knowledge and use of it. It operates fine in all gears so its not the gearbox itself but the computer or servo acting as the clutch on behalf of my leg. I wanted Auto but figured this was close enough. Reminded me of my 2001 BWM M3 with the SMG box. Basically the same thing.

Spoke to the repair place today about the glow plugs and they said it will run into next week now as the guy drilling out the old ones is a contractor to them not in house.......

One day i'll get to use this sodding thing again

I’m not disagreeing with you but Fiat has admitted that the comformatic box isn’t suitable for ambulances, with constant start/stop from cold (chance would be fine thing!) and harsh acceleration and braking scenarios. I know we are advanced drivers and all that but sometimes red mist does set in.

No worries and not suggesting you were disagreeing with anything. For Fiat to disable clutch self adjustment from the factory seemed like a huge booboo and seeems to be to root of the Comfortmatic random behaviour after about 20-30k miles

You want to try them at 300,000 😂

I might be missing what your explaining here.

The vehicle is a 2010 Fiat Ducato. 77k miles at delivery to me. The dealer told me at handover that the continued flashing is "normal" so I accepted him at face value. I then had issues starting the vehicle maybe 1 out of 3 times where it would fire up then cut out within a second. I could accept this once or twice in cold weather but not on the number of occations it happened over a month and not with CHECK GLOW PLUGS coming up on the instrument cluster display. So I checked the manual and sure enough continued flashing is a sign of a fault with the glow plugs. I raised it to the dealer and he said they wont touch it in house as not qualified and he referred me to the garage they use for stuff like that and confirmed its a warranty item. I dont believe its the RAC's job to pay as they are a 3rd party to it all and it was faulty at delivery. That was for the supplying dealer to sort before handover under fit for purpose. He either knew it was faulty and chose to ignore it as had not seen the CHECK GLOW PLUGS come up as will have only started it a few times i suspect moving it in and out the worksop or knew it was faulty and hopes to have the bill paid for by RAC which would be fraud on his part. Or was just hoping as it starts id live with it.

Either way. They are shagged and its a head off job that I wont be paying for.
Having read about the glow plugs being changed, they are not very robust so can snap in situ as they get corroded. Best left to the professionals. I allow mine to warm up on the glow plugs before cranking, say leaving 15 seconds which is unusually long even in the winter. My Peugeots with direct injection engines all flashed the glow plug light and were a doddle to replace as they were robust, bit like spark plugs and did not require a long read 9mm socket to get at. Having watched the instructions I have therefore decided to live with it until it gets to the point where the engine becomes difficult to start.

When I worked for the local council driving minibuses with Comfortmatic gearboxes we had the same faults , clutch failure very common and exactly as you described above.
All twenty two have now been replaced by Mercedes with full auto gearbox.

Update on this.

We are just about to finish the 3rd week at the repairers. Wednesday they said the head was rebuild and glow plugs done etc. Road test carried out ok but then after the road test it failed to start :banghead:

It sounds like what I was experiencing where it would often turn over and half fire up then slam dead. What I would describe as a hung start.

They are now having issues with their diagnostic machine talking to the van. It wont communicate and so were talking to Fiat direct for guidance on where to proceed.

The Dealership have finally sorted the RAC warranty to be active. I have spoken to them briefly and they just asked that the repairer phone them direct with the details to look at a possible claim. I dont really care what they say as the dealership had already emailed the repairer to say they would pay if the RAC don't. So worst case I pay them and claim back direct from the dealer or through a court.

End in sight :tmi:
Not really but as least the head is rebuilt and plugs etc so that can be at least ticked off..... Looking for a silver lining basically.

Oh and i'm booked in with Truma on the 22nd March.

In other news. Went to Las Palmas yesterday for an hour. Nice there. Glad i'm not flying today 😬
