My cousin showed up at the hab door on New Year's Eve. He'd been tracking our progress all the way from France to Sicily over the last few months and when he realised we'd finally camped in the one place for a while, himself and his lovely girlfriend flew to Catania, hired a camper and pulled in to the pitch next to us. Then came the knock on the door.
What a spin out eh? Especially as NYE was the night my dear old dad died and I never really feel like going out and enjoying the festivities as a result.
Anyway enough of that - He's told me that they'd love to tour Japan and hence the thread title.
Haven't met one Japanese M/H'er in all the time we've been on the road so I'm guessing it might not be a big pastime there. Still, if anyone's got any info......

I think it's a very big passtime there judging by how many Japanese imports are for sale. They are different beasts to ours though..

Our first camper was a Hi-Ace. It was a multi-purpose vehicle - usually in minibus configuration. When used as a camper it was compact for us larger Westerners. Still a fabulous vehicle and great fun.

Isn't there a law / regulation regarding the maximum size of vehicle that can be taken int Tokyo, or other large cities ?
Or have I just plucked that out of my ... ?

Touring Japan sounds like a great adventure though !!

Think you might be right Gizmouk. I've never been but my son has - says Tokyo is huge and crowded, he didn't like it much. But the rest of the country is also vast and beautiful. The cites are crowded and the countryside empty - or that was what he said.

I'd like to go and see my Uncle's grave, he died in WWII and is in a cemetery in Japan. I do have full details.

Probably correct as you cannot own a vehicle unless you have off -street parking for it before purchase. That's why the tiny vehicles got developed.

Hi all I am new to here but I felt I wanted to contribute with something to any post that are relevant to me and new experiences. I believe sometimes members do not post on old threads when they are too old so I thought I can share here as I have just come back from a trip to Japan. My partner and I have rented twice a campervan (same holiday, two parts of the trip) and it was fantastic! If you are planning to go and rend a campervan/motorhome and want to know more please do not hesitate to ask. Overall the experience has been amazing and one of the best campervan trips I have ever had!!! Can't wait to do it again

There’s a Japanese national/resident on the Dethleffs Owners Facebook group. I wouldn’t mind betting that he’d be a mine of useful information.

I’d try using the term ‘san’ on that group to find any posts from him.

Tread the Globe did Japan in their 20 year old Fiat Ducato camper....

Thank you for reviving this thread. Tell us more about your trip, where did you rent from and what roughly were the costs?

What bits of Japan did you see? Thanks.

These guys are very helpful. Anything you need to know about vanning in Japan. And nice people to boot.

We have just returned fro a month in Provence, and we saw several obviously hired vans with Japanese tourists driving them. So against what the OP suggested Japaneses motorhomers (well campervanners) do exist!
