Thetford Blue

No mention of method of use. I learned never to add it to the flush water - it gums up the pump eventually. I just drizzle a measure of my additive around the pan and leave the flap open a while for it to run into the (empty) tank.

I prefer to vent up and out, so the smell doesn't hang around. Nothing nicer than having your alfresco breakfast interrupted by the smell of your neighbour take their morning poo
In all our years of motorhome life I’ve never experienced this, Even when crammed in on an aire . We use a SOG2 as well vented underneath.
Are you sure it’s not an urban myth ?
Phil

Have you tried the green eco version?

This is what we use.
Searches on eBay will reveal along list of green fluid. Some places ban blue fluids Cheapest seems to be Kampa Green 5L at £19.99

Hi, I'm new to motothoming and just about to get going with my Carthago I150. Bought some toilet stuff from Blacks (part of Millets and made by Blue Diamond). WIfe got them so don't know how much but they were supposed to be half price in their sale. She got green and blue, just in case we go somewhere that don't except the blue one.

But, we have the SOG system, so does this mean we don't need it?

I'm assuming the SOG system if the fan mechanism that kicks in when you opent the toilet blade and has a pipe going from the toilet casette.

Additive for the flush water and additive for the cassette are usually very different liquids

We have had SOGs on our last 5 vans over 20+ years. All of them I have just fitted the outlet in the cassette door.
Never used chemicals, never had any complaints.

If, like us, you visit friends who have their own digester system for black waste they won't want ANY chemicals in their system.
Not a problem for us as we have a SOG and never use chemicals.
In fact one couple with such a system in Australia, if we stay in their house ask us to use only the special soap, shampoo and washing powder that they have to protect their system.

Lidl washing pods, about 1.99 per pack and a cap full of zaflora, choose your favourite.

My Thetford toilet has an extractor fan built into the base of the cassette holder. Not used any chemicals for about 7 years . You could save a fortune by not using chemicals.

We don’t have a SOG unit. I’d quite like to have one but they attract a lot of criticism too. We’ve used Toilet Blue now for 2 years and found it much more effective than the Thetford product. It’s much easier to handle, you get the correct dose just by gently squeezing the bottle until the dose is full. Then you can pour it into the cassette. It doesn’t stain like the other stuff either.
As for smells, it copes pretty well, even in hot weather.
Although it doesn’t have formaldehyde, I don’t know what chemicals it does use. There are many who advocate just using water and emptying the cassette daily. That, to me, is a counsel of perfection. We don’t always have access to a black water drain every day and we find that having something that really manages the possible odour important.
We’ve tried bio tabs, fabric conditioner, and brewer’s yeast tablets but none of them really delivered like the True Blue.
I don’t think that any of the toilet chemicals can possibly break down the contents in the time allowed and a lot of them will destroy septic tanks.
Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choice…..

I have installed a dog in our pvc as we didn't have a window in the bathroom and it was smelling when hot. The dog works really well no more smells and don't need blue.

I’ve been using Thetford Aqua Kem Green Sachets or the Dometic equivalent (one smells better than the other, Thetford more pleasant I think). 1 tab plus 3 litres water, job done. No mess, easy to store as they come small tubs, environmentally friendly and have pleasant odour. A friend put us on to these when we got the motorhome in 2017 and we’ve stuck with them as so easy to use. Each to their own of course but why some people always want to cut corners is beyond me. Use the right product for the job. How often do you go away? You’ve spent £50k on a motorhome or a significant amount at least, why look to save a few quid using the wrong products. Just saying, my opinion that’s all.

I was under the impression that toilet chemicals helped break down the waste, but I see Elsan Green, which we used, is marketed as a toilet deoderant. I forget how much I paid last time, £11 for a bottle perhaps. Is that really all the stuff does, provide a nice (or less bad) smell?
This is a question that has been on my mind, as a newbie. We also use the Elsan Green, which I like the smell of. My hubby is reluctant to use the toilet and prefers the on site facilities. The last trip we did I decided to throw caution to the wind and use the toilet for -( and I can’t believe I’m saying this, as a grown up, on a public forum) for ahem, “number twos”…
When I emptied the cassette, about 24 hours later, it all smelled lovely, but was pretty much the same as when it went in. (Oh god, I’m 62 and discussing poo…) There wasn’t any “ breaking down” as far as I could see.
Are ToBoldlyGo and I missing something here?

"it all smelled lovely,"
I assume there's a hint of sarcasm in that....🤢

I favour finding a Waitrose & if I must slum it a Morrisons, they tend to be cleanest, try not to use the van one unless desperation requires

We only use our own facilities in the comfort of our van. Only use public toilets in an emergency. Funny how people have completely different preferences where they perform the necessary.

I am still trying to finish the last of 2 large bottles of Thetford Blue that has travelled over with us from Caravan To MH. The MH being German has a roof exiting SOG unit, so I am told we dont need to use any chemicals in the cassette. But its me that empties the Damn Thing, so we will see eh?
Well I aint gonna waste the Blue stuff, when its gone, its gone, as they say, however I have to finish off the bottle of Pink stuff also, which is diluted in a trigger spray bottle, its very good at keeping the bowl clean & sanitised, however I hate the strong smell of Almonds that I get when using it.
I do like the smell of normal anti bacterial surface spray, so that's what I intend to use in the future for the toilet bowl, as its not harsh on any plastics or surfaces to my knowledge.

The official answer is that No, you dont need a charcoal filter or any cassette additive, when you have a motorised SOG unit fitted, although if it didnt vent through the roof, I might be concerned especially if it vented into the side awning.

So the jury is out, until I am run out of The Blue stuff, as to whether "the emptier" feels the need for any additive, even a Bio Washing Tab.
I think the best advice is to empty the cassette as often as you can, dont let it ferment, especially in hot weather.
