Just a few years ago Germany had a fantastic autobahn system. But what a nightmare they are these days. Road works, road closures - almost as bad as UK.

Last September we endured long queues in Northern Germany and having just travelled through from Munich to Luxemburg, I think they re actually getting worse. So many roadworks, so many closures and very poor signage for diversions

How are others finding it?

Normal fine but seriously dodgy when wet
They don't put much camber on them to help with runoff
Roads wear out and need resurface at some point everywhere

& most are being upgraded from 2 to 4 lanes so bound to be queues- Be worth it eventually. Same up the French 'Route de Soleil' . All should have been upgraded 20 years ago.

Couldn't agree more - we followed a similar route in the opposite direction, heading south to Austria three weeks ago. It was a challenging journey, to say the least. We were surprised and disappointed to find so many sections of motorway closed, and as you say - poor, or non-existent, diversion signage. Also, roadworks every few miles.

We are currently south of Munich and heading back, so expecting more hold-ups and delays... Will try to vary our route home, to see if we have more luck.

Road works and just the huge volume of traffic, at least we don't have to pay to use them !!!

Not noticed any difference over the last 10 years they always seem to be working on them. Holdups aren't normally as bad as on UK ones. When you look at the miles of Autobhans they have, megga job maintaining them especially the amount of work they had to do bringing the old east German ones up to scratch.

I have just left the Baltic coast and headed down to Fryburg. Most main roads had long stretches of roadworks but they didn't cause delays and surfaces were in the main quite good. Some minor roads were abysmal, just a series huge potholes, some of which were badly repaired and some not repaired at all, many small town roads were badly maintained cobbles and any speed over around 25 mph would probably result in damages and things becoming loose.

Having said all that I am enjoying being a guest in a beautiful country where I find the people friendly and welcoming so rather than complain I just make the observations above whilst knowing that on my return to the UK many of the roads I travel on to get home will be absolute crap, very crowded and in bad repair. Hey ho.

Just went south down that route and was surprised with the number of roadworks between
Luxembourg and Lake Titisee.
Didn't get held up too much but I traveled that stretch on a sunday

and many now have speed restriction on them.

on the East side things are much better and if you wonder over the border to Poland then you'll find that the German Autobahns have been replicated there and they are all new, great condition and very little traffic issues.

You werent driving on the A1/A2 20odd years aog massive ruts in the roads and mostly two lane with loads of roadworks back then proble is they ban HGV's from overtaking for large parts of the day and being central europe they get a hell of a load of freight driving over them so wear out quicker.

Just come back from south east Bavaria and travelled via Munich-wurtzburg- Frankfurt and the road works are worst just 10 km before Wurtzburg. Putting extra lanes in both sides so major interruption, avoid at all costs!!

Where did you manage to get to? We toured the Baltic coast last year and was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. Not mega busy either. Heading back to Germany shortly but this time roughly along the beer and castle route.

There's a Bookface group of which I'm a member pushing for the reopening of the Harwich to Esbjerg ferry, and one of the big complaints, apart from the distance to reach Scandinavia by car, is the state of the motorways around Hamburg which have been undergoing repairs for years and which are set to continue for many years to come.

Up to the naval museum at wilhelmshaven. Very interesting and you can park officially on the seafront overnight. The into Poland to visit Stetin where wife's ancestors came from. Back into Germany and to Uberlingen. After that back into France For a couple of weeks and gone via tunnel

All these roadworks in mainland Europe are down to the fact that they are all trying to get the work completed before Brexit when the UK stops paying for it!:imoutahere::whistle2:

To add, coming south from Denmark we cross the Elbe at Gluckstadt to avoid Hamburg or as we did going north in June use the Cuxhaven/Brunsbuttel crossing.

This was meant in jest, I suppose but it is true , in small French villages they are ripping up all the old streets and putting down these horrible white cobbles and humps, no one wants them especially the locals, but they have just got to keep spending g the money.
