We have a Benimar Tessoro and the sat nav is not very good so we are looking to replace it.
Does anyone have any recommendations please?

We have thr Garmin Campo 780
Allows you to put in your dimensions but always be aware, they're not as smart as you may wish and can still very easily take you down those narrow lanes

We have Avtex Tourer 2 .It’s been a bit “ temperamental” a few times but gives me the confidence to get to most places .

Bit like ours then that tends to like to throw in a 'loop" in to a journey

Google maps on iPhone , takes you to the door every time 👍
Wow google maps is the worst sat nav I’ve ever used, I’ve took it off, it’s ok if you want to travel on a major road and say” Take me to Birmingham from Bristol et”

Get off the beaten track in the countryside trying to find small sites/parking etc and it’s positively dangerous. It tries to repeatedly take you down tracks that aren’t even roads, house lanes, once took us from Bedale to Leyburn down so many country single track lanes it was unbelievable. Same in Scotland for 3 weeks it tried to take us down roads that weren’t even roads.

There is a main road all the way there.

On a recent trip through France, our Garmin 890 camper took us through the most ridiculous detour in Rouen. When I looked at the street map afterwards all it had to do was say carry on straight ahead.I have totally lost confidence in it and looking for an alternative.Having said that none of them are perfect but there is no excuses for the latest debacle through a busy French city.

Perhaps there was a road closure on the normal routing and it was simply bypassing the road closure. They are smarter than you give them credit for.

Our UK maps do not include road width and suitability criteria. The few roads with a legal width limit are recorded but I would guess that 90% of our unsuitable roads are not going to be picked up by any sat nav. I tried Co-Pilot Caravan and it was no better than Google Maps or Waze, just had less good traffic information. Quite simply if the information is not on the map no system can pick it up.

I think St3v3 has the answer.
Google Maps and the two unsuitable road detectors mounted on the front of your head.

Tell me about it!:swear2:
Using our 760 it was furiously telling me to turn off the main road I knew was the correct road to go but I know best! Until we reached the tailback after a road accident!

I have been using CoPilot caravan on my phone for a lot of years now, I pay extra for "active traffic" you can input size and weight, it works for us, most of the time ;)

I am going to ditch Google maps and am looking for a good alternative.

It has a habit of changing the route that you have meticulously researched to avoid a queue at a set of traffic lights, sending you down totally unsuitable roads.

Hi, if you have the Xzent sat nav (as we do in our Benimar) then it is worth persevering with it, by at least upgrading it to the latest version of software (install instructions and software available here https://www.xzent.com/en/support/software/ ).

Also recommend setting the route selection option to ‘easy’.

Our unit has worked flawlessly since upgrading to the current 4.1 version of sw.

😎

When folks have problems with sat navs it’s often the user, and not the device, that’s the issue.

Don't agree. CoPilot Caravan is for us, the best. It isn't free, but you can input your dimensions, your preferences, your required speed on each type of road and it hasn't led us astray yet. With the annual subs, traffic is thrown in. The traffic data/delays is usually bang on.

We have tried Waze, Google Maps. RoadLords, and a couple of others. I once did a comparison route between Google, Waze and CoPilot down to the Normandy beaches. We had CoPilot on the tablet, Waze on Mrs DDJC's phone and Google on my phone. Google and Waze were fne, but it thought we were a car and wanted to take us through Rouen. Rouen is quicker by about ten minutes, but you get traffic there with no notice. I had put in my CoPilot prefs for bigger roads and it sensibly took us over the Pont du Normandie.

I just hit the “No Thanks” if it offers me un researched routes. I think you will find any system with active traffic information will come up with alternative routes and sometimes it can save a lot of time. My sister recently sat in a traffic queue for an hour where there was a perfectly good alternative which active traffic would have picked up. If all else fails the unsuitable road detectors stop me taking questionable turnings, I stay on the main road and let it recalculate the route.

I stopped using it when they dropped the road speed profiling, it was the one redeeming feature. Have they reintroduced this feature? Dimensions only help if there is an actual width limit on a road, most narrow roads don’t have legal width limits.

I had a lifetime payment for Co Pilot Caravan but the traffic was annual. I gave up on paying that when it sent me down the closed M3, it even knew the M3 was closed because it gave an eta of 2 days later when it was due to reopen. I complained and they did the sloping shoulders bit and blamed a contractor. It then did exactly the same 2 weeks later when the M3 was again closed for the weekend. You can lose faith in a company, I did, mostly because they wouldn’t own the problem.

I also stopped using standard CoPilot and conducted a long running interplay with the new owners. I then tried a load of others, but none fit the bill.

Annoyed with myself, I went back to CoPilot, the Caravan version. I have an annual subscription, for £29.99 but for me its worth it. It has road preferences, road speed profiling, height, width restrictions and live traffic. I set mine to love motorways, duals, and A roads. Neutral towards B Roads and to avoid local roads. Motorways and duals are set at 60mph. 50mph for A roads, etc.

I would try and revitalise your Copilot Caravan subscription. You may find that traffic is now included. Their licensing system is not very good at remembering older registrations.

CoPilot Caravan COMES WITH active traffic!!
It might do now that it's an annual fee but I paid a one off fee years ago and I think it's £10 a year for the active traffic.

Yes but you have to be looking at the satnav at the precise moment it changes the route and then touch the screen to reject it.

Isn’t it now illegal to interact with a device whilst driving?

Unless I am missing something I can’t see settings for vehicular dimensions on this
Select the settings "wheel" at the top left next to the search bar on top of the map. Then select navigation in the menu. the choose Truck and the vehicle sizes are there. It really is a superb app.

No road closure. When I rejoined the main road I could see the traffic lights where Mr Garmin told me to turn right. It was less than 50 yards and I had been given a scenic tour of downturn Rouen.

Is there a different version for trucks as I cannot see that option
