The 5 Rules of Motorhome Happiness

I envy those people with a "just get in and go" attitude. I have to mentally prepare for a day or two beforehand. What have I forgotten?..What is the best time to travel & the best route to minimise possible traffic problems?...I love my van but i am so wary of the traffic these days.
I recently set off from the Cotswolds to head North at 4 a.m. to get past the dreaded M5/M6 junction with minimum disruption. For very long distances in the UK (200 miles +) I often travel at night and rest up at motorway services for a couple of hours..or pay £16 for longer.

Just keep it ready to go.
Me and my motorhome have a relationship where she knows when we gotta go we gotta go and she needs to be ready in 10 mins :)
so I make sure I keep her up to date and raring to go.
;)

My only rule is: Am I enjoying what I'm doing whether it's a 2 day quickie or a longer break away, if it's not enjoyable why stress yourself out doing it.

I would also ask the other half although you might find if they're not happy you would soon know!

My main rule is to always dump and fill at every opportunity, other than that nothing.

Agree. Even do it en-route so that one can use wild stops, or two.

Just take it as it comes van Reddy to go at any time.
It gose back on the road on the tenth.
I don't usually drive more than two hrs if I can help it without a brake.
When I park up usually for minimum of 1 HR there's always sumwher to stop
We try not to drive in the dark and try to stop befor 4pm.
Fill up with water when there's water empty whare ever possible usually at least once a day
We car carry water for two days
Regular checks of the black things in each corner of the van.
Led lights make all the difference we also carry sum LED strings of lights just in case.
UHT is a must and Yorkshire tea
We do carry a spare caset but never had to use it verry often.
And remember the holiday starts as soon as you load the van and drive off.

The MH is always ready to go but always ensure the fridge is on hook up the night before so it is ready to go.

I think I have OCD as I have a MH packing list. I just tick off the items on the list to ensure I have everything and jobs a good un. The
missus takes the p**s but she always forgets something 🙄

Rule 6: take enough tools (& spare tyre) so you dont need to call the RAC/AA or go to a motorhome dealer.....

I like the 'always be ready' attitude. Be prepared. I keep the basics always on standby in the warmer months. As I live far far north being always ready in the winter is not so easy as food, water freezes so I keep food in a bag in the house and can fill water etc at home and be ready to go in half an hour (as long as I am not blocked in by snow).

Having the MH kept at home makes life much simpler to drop and run.

Everything else about Motorhome happiness for me is thinking forward and then accepting what is :cautious:

Good guidance Jim not sure about rules as occasionally they have to be changed. for example had a conference in Scotland so broke the back of the journey by driving most of the way to Amsterdam from friedrichshafen (370 odd miles) stayed a couple of nights then caught a ferry, drove to kilder forest stayed the night then onwards to a conference for business staying 3 nights before driving south.

But other than a ‘need’ the guidance provided is quite sensible 👍
