My road tax runs out at the end of this month but we are camped in Portugal until the beginning of of may. The van won’t move off the site until we leave . Should I tax it or save 2 months and tax when we leave . What do you think ?

The consensus is usually if you’re on the highway it has to be legal in the country that it’s registered in, but you’re not moving!
If it were to get stolen (I know it probably wouldn’t) but that would open a can of worms, should you have to claim!
I think also when you re tax it you have to be physically in the U.K. (but who the hell will know you’re not?)
So being the tight sod that you are you will probably sorn it🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣
Enjoy your hols regardless, love to Yvonne👍👍

Insurance normally states vehicle has to be road legal. If you sorn it you will have to tell your insurance company.
As it is illegal to sorn a vehicle if its outside of the UK so how would you explane that to your insurance company if you had a incident on site in Portugal.

Oh gawd I've regularly sorned my van for various months when I know I had no chance of using it (typically December when where every little helps requires every possible helper). Never spoke to insurer yet. Van is on drive, but I could have immediately gone online to tax if I wanted to drive it somewhere, valid mot, service record, etc?

Worth telling them some won't insure a scorned vehicle.

I'm surprised you had not gone over the insurance doc with a magnifying glass prior to this. You can get off the road insurance . 900 miles on the car this year always taxed and insured

Just checked policy documents of MH car & motorbike for last few years. No mention of SORN invalidating the policy on any of the policies I have held. Ill check policies in future though before SORNing over winter. Be interesting to see if anyone has a policy which states it becomes invalid on SORN?

I don’t know how you stand regarding being on a site outside of the uk or its jurisdictions.

But in the uk if you are parked anywhere the public have access to the vehicle needs to be road compliant by law.

Insurance isn't affected in the UK if you sorn your MH so long as it's on private land, it only has to be road legal if you intend to take it onto the public roads etc.

When you take it abroad however it has to remain taxed at all times even on private land as that is the requirement by UK law and thus insurance companies. If you sorn it when abroad in effect you have no comprehensive cover, just third party.

We regularly sorn our MH when in the UK as there's no point in paying when we have no intention of driving it for a month or more.
