Hi folks,
We’ve got a 2001 Peugeot Boxer Autosleeper Symbol. It’s fitted with a 2 litre petrol engine.
As this is our first van (bought in 2017) we didn’t want to / couldn’t afford to, throw lots of money at a newer model and due to emissions regs. we couldn’t keep an old diesel on the road in our area.
Though the engine’s fine it’s quite underpowered. The bodywork & interior are in fantastic condition and the van is ideal for me & the mrs. so we’re not looking to upgrade.
At the moment I’m sitting here under the awning in in SW France, tucking into a bottle of red, & I wondered if anyone knows if we could swap the old petrol engine & gearbox for a modern Diesel unit?
Any advice would be much appreciated ?,
Cheers,
Slotty

To swap from petrol to diesel would be a mammoth job as everything including gearbox, ecu, exhaust, even fuel tank can be different. Unless you had a donor van there to raid it just wouldn't be cost effective

If it's still running ok, don't see any reason to change it.

I think it would be a bit more than just the engine & box,, driveshafts would be different, exhaust, fuel tank/fuel lines/filter, plus glow plug relay etc, modern diesels need an ecu to monitor sensors etc, I'd leave as is if it was me.

You could try to eek a bit more oomph out of the 2ltr petrol and even look at gas conversion to bring fuel costs down but the only engines that can make decent gains power wise are the turbo diesels.

possible, but not a chance in hell of getting it passed as a newer euro class

best bet is buy a newer van and transfer the interior and new habitation windows

Get yourself a Renault ambulance and convert it with the inside of yours.

Be a lot heaper than trying to buy all the bits to convert the engine. The list would be huge.

My vans the same, 2lt petrol but with a talisman body does about 25mpg with a light foot and 65 to 70mph on the flat. Apparently the engine is the same as the Citroen xantia and peugeot 406 but downtuned only producing 80bhp instead of 105bhp like the cars. I think it's just the injector pump and ecu that's different on the vans. Easier than swapping engines.

Many Thanks for the reply mate, seems like I’ll be giving it a miss

Great bit of advice Delbert, thanks for that, recon I’ll have to look into this

Try one of the turbo companies - that might be a relatively cheap method. I had an Elddis with that engine and it was hopeless.

How much payload do you have spare?
You could fit some in wheel electric motors to assist the existing petrol powered motor up front?
Would need a reasonable amount of spare capacity for a battery pack underneath though.
Could also use the pack as a habitation power source.

Ironically if you put a decent lpg kit on it you would have an engine considered cleaner than most. You possibly would get a little more oomph but probably not enough.
