Limited motorhome and campervan hire previously.
Hi, we have finally taken ownership of 6.4 camper van. We want to make a couple of shakedown trips not too far from East Sussex to see what we don't and do need. Its November so places of interest and potentially indoors are of interest. Any ideas most welcome, probably 4 or 5 nights, sites are not a problem. Places to see at this time of year and camper van accessible are the problem.

Horam, about 15 miles from Battle has a very good site. Open all year. Couple of decent pubs within 3 miles and an LPG pump at the BP garage on the A22 about 5 miles South of Horam.
There are 7 lakes, lovely rural walks, fishing and stables if horses interest you, plus a pleasant Lakeside Cafe. Not much otherwise (general stores within a 1/2 mile walk to Horam village) without travelling away from the site but ideal for a shakedown trip and not far if you have to nip home, having forgotten a corkscrew.
I've stayed there twice and it's pretty pricey. Not really my sort of place as it's a bit posh but I stayed there as it was convenient for special family events.

We are waiting for a Devon Aztec XL and not feeling very patient ....

I've just remembered another one......
Chiddingly. Open all year. Lovely couple own and run it. I ran a classic motorbike camping rally with 40 bikes there last October. Great pub <10 mins stroll down the quiet lane.

That's great thank you for the suggestions.

I was quite frankly gobsmacked that it was still available. Very nearly missed it, it had been on their website for at least 5 or 6 days. I just rang up on the off chance it was still there, assuming it would be sold.

I think camping on the drive is too easy. You'll be tempted to go back inside to grab stuff that wasn't really necessary. And you might not encounter unexpected stuff either.

We went to the nearest campsite to home. We were only 20 mins away if a disaster happened, and friends weren't far off of we needed a favour.

Try CAMC Brighton site, bloody expensive but a nice site with lots of nearby options both internal and external

We like Brookfield Farm CAMC site. No facilities, but nice and quiet. It is also cheap.
